Development targets:
1. Essential engine characteristics such as power densitiy, power-to-weight ratio,
acceleration behaviour, dimensions and mechanical interfaces shall be as close
as possible to model TB03
2. Improvement of TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) with priority regarding the
reduction of specific fuel consumption
3. Maintain the three different cylinder configurations 12,16 and 20V for the MTU
application groups 1DS, 1D and 1B
4. Series 1163-04 will run on low- and ultra-low-sulphur fuels without additives
5. Compliance with the latest classification requirements such as ABS, LRS, GL,
DNV, BV, RINA, others on request.
6. Compliance with military noise, shock and EMC requirements
For that reason, MTU has decided, to further develop the series 1163 in order
to fulfil the IMO Tier 2 emission regulation with internal engine measures i.e.
without exhaust after treatment systems
