Nuclear energy

What is nuclear energy?

• This form of energy derived through nuclear
reactions. Radioactive elements like uranium
and plutonium are used to generate nuclear
energy. This energy is then used tro generate
electricity.
Nuclear fission
• Nuclear fission is the process by which nuclear
energy is generated. It is the process in which
a heavy atom splits into smaller atoms
releasing a large amount of energy.
How is nuclear fission in a reactor is
done?
• 1)Uranium atom is bombarded with high
speed neutrons.
• 2)This spilts the nucleus of uranium atom into
smaller fragments and releases a large
amount of energy and neutrons.
• 3)the neutrons produced in the fission
reactions causes further spiltting of nucleus.
Thus this is also called chain reaction
Nuclear power plant
• A nuclear power plant or nuclear power
station is a thermal power station in which the
heat source is the nuclear reactor.Nuclear
power plant is near the water to remove the
heat which the heater makes.
Advantages of nuclear energy
• The production of electricity through nuclear
power plants reduces the use of fossil fuels to
run thermal power plants.
• The amount of nuclear fuels used in nuclear
reactors is lesser than the amount of fossil
fuels used to produce the same amount of
energy.
• Nuclear power stations do not depend on
whether conditions, winds, tides, etc
Disadvantages of nuclear energy
• The waste materials from nuclear power
plants can harm people and the envirnmont.
• Any accidental damage to systems can cause
huge destruction.
• Initial cost of establishing a nuclear power
plant is high.
• Thwe life of nuclear power plant is limited
,that is they have an expiry period after which
they have to be dismantled safely.
