DEFINITION OF MUSIC
• is "the art of arranging tones in an orderly
sequence so as to produce a unified and continuous
composition
• It is a unique language for expression.
• Music is science, mathematical, a foreign language
and an art.
ELEMENTS OF MUSIC
Pitch and Melody
- A pitch may be high or low
- Melody is a group of notes played one
after the other.
- Melody is the tune. It's often the easiest
part of music to remember, the part that
you hum.
Rhythm
- defined as the pattern or
placement of sounds in time and
beats in music.
- is the arrangement of sounds as
they move through time.
Harmony
- When two or more sounds are heard
simultaneously , harmony is created.
- Harmony is a term arising from music and
it describes the process of playing or
singing two or more different notes at the
same time to form chords.
- A chord is a three or more musical notes
played at the same time.
Texture
- The total sound of a piece of music may have varying
textures.
- Individual melodic and rhythmic motifs may have
textures such as:
- Legato meaning smoothly and no break between
notes
- Staccato or detached, it is the opposite of legato.
There is distinct gap between the notes.
Tempo
- The rate of speed of a composition or
section
- The Italian word at the beginning of a
music piece that indicates how slow or fast
the piece should be played.
- Some tempo remarks are:
- Largo means very slow.
- Presto means very fast.
- Moderato means moderately.
Dynamics
- It refers to the comparative loudness and softness of
music
- The expressive effect of music is changed when the
dynamics are changed significantly.
- Some dynamic remarks are:
- Forte means loud.
- Crescendo means gradually becoming louder
- Mezzo piano means half-soft
Timbre
- Also known as tone color; it refers
to the quality of sound that
distinguishes one voice or
instrument from another.
