een established following the Millennium Summit of the Unit
ed Nations in 2000, following the adoption of the United Nati
ons Millennium Declaration. All 191 United Nations member
states at that time, and at least 22 international organizations

It is critical that the natural resources base and ecosystems are managed sustainably to ensure that peop
le’s food requirements and other social, economic, and environmental needs are sufficiently met. Climat
e change, conflicts over access to resources, and increased water scarcity all pose a threat to not only en
vironmental sustainability but also food security.
