Electrical Conductivity of Metals

 Electrical conductivity in metals is a result of the

movement of electrically charged particles. The atoms
of metal elements are characterized by the presence of
valence electrons.
Transfer of Energy

 The transfer of energy is strongest when there is little

resistance. On a billiard table, this occurs when a ball
strikes against another single ball, passing most of its
energy onto the next ball. If a single ball strikes multiple
other balls, each of those will carry only a fraction of
the energy.
Metal Conductivity

 Conduction in metals must follow Ohm's law, which

states that the current is directly proportional to the
electric field applied to the metal.
Metals that conduct electricity
A good electrical conductor is a material
that allows passage through it easily,
without offering much resistance. Instead,
we call the conductor a material that offers
resistance to the passage of electrical flow
through it.

Because non-metals do not conduct
electricity?

• Non-metals are bad conductors of electricity but

in certain circumstances they can do it

• This is because their molecular bonds (covalent in general) do not

have free electrons, and these are necessary to conduct electricity.
• NON-METALS FORM COVALENT (NON-METAL-NON-METAL) OR IONIC
(NON-METAL-METAL) BONDS, WHERE ELECTRONS CAN NOT MOVE
AND THEREFORE DO NOT CONDUCT ELECTRICITY SINCE
ELECTRICITY IS THE FREE MOVEMENT OF ELECTRONS BY A
