ANS PHARMACOLOGY

An Introduction to PANS
The autonomic nervous system, also called the
visceral, vegetative, or involuntary nervous system, is
distributed widely throughout the body and regulates
autonomic functions that occur without conscious
control.

ANS it consists of nerves, ganglia, and plexuses that

innervate the heart, blood vessels, glands, other
INTRODUCTION visceral organs, and smooth muscle in various tissues.

Subdivided into SANS, PANS and ENS.

Anatomy of ANS
1. Efferent neurons
2. Afferent neurons
3. Sympathetic neurons
4. Parasympathetic neurons
5. Enteric neurons

Functions of
the ANS
• There are two Types; • NICOTINC RECEPTORS:-
Types of Muscarinic And Nicotinic. Nicotinic acetylcholine
cholinergic Muscarinic Receptors:-
receptors, or nAChRs, are
acetylcholine receptors that
Receptors Muscarinic acetylcholine
receptors, or mAChRs,
transduce the signal through
GPCR and are located at post
are acetylcholine ganglionic neurons of PSNS
receptors that transduce the
signal through GPCR and are
located at the effector organs.
Muscarinic………Toadstool Poison (Muscarine)…….mimics action of Ach on effector organs
Nicotinic…………Nicotine………….mimics action of Ach on Post-Ganglionic fibres

5 types of Muscarinic Receptors: M1, M2, M3, M4 and M5

M1………salivary glands, stomach, CNS
M2………heart, CNS
M3………GIT, blood vessels, glands (endo and exocrine), Broncho tubules, Smooth muscle
M4………CNS, skeletal Muscles
M5………CNS

3 Types of Nicotinic Receptors:

1. Nicotinic receptor for NMJ (Nm)
2. Nicotinic receptor for NS and adrenal
medulla (Nn)
3. Nicotinic Receptor for Autonomic Ganglia (Ng)
