O (Thus Noli becomes

Neli!) Be careful not to
let that happen or may it
be so. Please greet
mother and daughter
for me, especially the E

Rizal courted Nelly and asked the Bousteads for

her hand in the marriage

BUT
• Nelly wanted Rizal to be
converted to
PROTESTANTISM
• Nelly’s mother did not like
Rizal
10

Conversion to Protestantism could be

overcome; what pained him was the
insinuation that he was interested in her
money. Rizal decided to
leave Biarritz
and Nelly
forever.
11

If he had indeed, turned Protestant, swallowed his pride,

and marry Nelly, we would not have had him as a
national hero.
12

Rizal wrote to Jesuit provincial regarding the rumors of becoming a

Protestant:

“ As to being a Protestant…. If Your Reverence knew what I had lost for not
accepting Protestantism, you would not say such a thing. Had I not always
respected the religious idea, had I held religion as a matter of convenience
or an art of getting along in this life, instead of being a poor exile. I would be
a rich man, free and covered with honors.
Rizal, Protestant!”
