THE LIFE OF A

WORKING STUDENT
REPORT BY: ABUCAY & DAAL
Being a working student is not easy, it
takes a lot to manage the demands of
works while going to school at the same
time, with some even raising a family. It
can a daunting experience, but getting a
diploma in the end while earning your
keep is definitely possible.
THERE ARE SIX TIPS HOW TO
MANAGE OUR LIFE AS A
WORKING STUDENT:
1. KEEP YOUR EYES ON
THE FINISH LINES

“Focus on your goal. If your goal

is to finish your studies, make time
to do it because when you lack
focus, you will struggle to succeed
with anything.” says Tet Pascual,
quality analyst for Harte Hanks
2. Save up for the
rainy days
It’s hard to save, especially
when you’re a working students
who spent most of your salary
on school tuition fee or
supporting your family. As much
as possible, however set aside
some of your hard-earned cash
for days when you really need it.
3.MANAGE YOUR TIME
WELL AND COMMIT TO
A SCHEDULE

Working students need to

divide their time and
attention for school and
work. Successful student
time management is all
about preparing and making
every minute count,
because if not you might
end up burning out.
4.FIND A JOB NEAR
YOUR SCHOOL OR
HOME
You may not be able to change
the situation that requires you
be a working student, but you
can at least have the option to
choose a job that’s
conveniently located near the
two places you spend the most
time in.
5.HAVE SUPPORT
SYSTEM
Most often than not, working
student get frustrated with
their situation, especially if
you’re going through it alone.
Ask support from your
manager, peers, family, and
even from your new
classmates.
6. Find time to sleep and relax
There will come a point in your working
student life that you’ll be deprived of
sleep because of deadlines, reports, or
final exams. Lack of sleep makes you lose
focus and makes you less effective at
both work and school, so find time to get
at least 6 hours of shut-eye every night if
you want to function properly in work
and school
THERE ARE THREE
TIPS HOW TO
BALANCE WORK
AND SCHOOL:
1. Develop a plan of
attack
Think about your personality,
goals and responsibilities,
and develop a realistic plan
for making it happen.
2. Avoid time wasters.

Arrange to work and take classes as

close to home as possible to cut
down on transportation time. Learn
to say “no” to black holes that suck
up your time and energy
3. Manage stress levels.
Stress is an inevitable part of being
a student and a worker, so learn
how to keep it in check. Take
regular breaks, get enough sleep,
stay physically active, get out into
the great outdoors and let yourself
enjoy some of what life has to offer.
FIVE COMMON
PROBLEMS
OF A WORKING
STUDENT
1. Time Management

Problem: College is academically

challenging. For many, college
courses require much more
effort than high school classes
did. Unlike most high schools,
colleges often pack two years of
content into one year. Many
students take a full 15 credit
semester, while others try to
cram in up to 18 or even 21
credits. At times, it seems
impossible to stay on top of it all.
2. Homesickness
Problem: Whether they admit it or
not, most students will at one
point get homesick, especially
those who attend a school that is
more than three hours away from
home. Freshmen suffer more, as it
is presumably their first year away
from home.
3. Depression
Problem: Every problem on this
list can raise a student's stress
level and contribute to emotional
lows. Some find temporary relief
in partying which, in excess and
in the long run, may contribute
to depression.
4.Sickness/Health
Conditions
Problem: Heightened stress,
poor self-care, and lack of
sleep can cause health
problems. Living in close
quarters also poses health
risks and can increase a
student's chances of
contracting illnesses.
5.Partying

Problem: Partying in itself is not a

problem. Parties can be a great way
for students to blow off steam.
However, sometimes partying can
cause problems. Drugs and alcohol
can lead to poor choices, risky
behavior, health risks, and even
potentially deadly situations. Having
sex without sober consent and
without taking the necessary
precautions can be traumatic,
dangerous, and even criminal.
CINDY IS ONE OF THE EXAMPLE AS WORKING
STUDENT
The life of a working student is
never easy. But it’s a path that
many Filipinos choose to take in
order to pay for their education.

Even though there are schools

that can accommodate the
schedules of working students,
most jobs don’t do the same.
Students often have to work long
shifts and take even longer
commutes just to get to school or
work in time.
This was the life Cindy have chosen for herself. But
unlike other working students, she discovered
Onlinejobs.ph. Instead of working in a fast food
restaurant or a mall, she worked as a virtual
assistant. She didn’t let her inexperience or poor
English stop her from giving it a try. She got her
chance when an employer saw her determination
and willingness to learn new skills.
Filipinos value education and are willing
to do everything to get it. Outsourcing
has helped thousands of Filipino students
pursue their dreams of a good education.
Cindy is just one example.

With traffic being the number one cause for stress in Metro
Manila, Leizl suggests that working students find a job that is
