Writing an Action Research :

The Easy Way

Objectives:

◆ Revolutionize the research practices of the school by:

Writing an action research the easy way
◆ Increase number of research practitioners
◆ Ensure that research findings contributes to basic
education performance indicators; and
◆ Appreciate the integration of research activities in the
teaching profession, the happy and enjoyable ways.

Finding SOLUTION to a problem

Maria Virginia Egipto

10
How to do it?
 Identify a problem to be studied
 Collect data on the problem
 Organize, analyze, and interpret the data
 Develop a plan to address the problem
 Implement the plan
 Evaluate the results of the actions taken
 Identify a new problem
 Repeat the process
11
Compile all the data you got. Keep tracks
of the records.

Example

According to Henderson and Berla (1994), family plays a crucial role in

student’s academic achievement. Parents who spend more time with their child’s
school activity tend to have a better class standing. From different studies across the
world and from different researchers around the world, they find out that parents
contribute to the success of the students.
Fourteen (14) out of 35 students were being followed up by their parents at
home after schooling. These 14 students are the Top achievers for the first quarter.
The rest of the students or 60% of the class are independently working on their
school tasks have lower grades.
The Project Kaagapay Si Nanay aims to increase the involvement of the
parents to their children’s school works. With this, it may increase the academic
performance of their children. Also, research reports that engaging parents in an
active role in the school curriculum can open alternative opportunities for children
to succeed in academics (Machen, Sandra M., et al, 2004).

16
II. ACTION RESEARCH QUESTIONS

How can parental involvement help improve

students’ engagement and academic
performance of selected Grade 2 students?

17
III. PROPOSED INNOVATION, INTERVENTION, AND STRATEGY

In the study conducted by Goodall and Montgomery on “Parental involvement to Parental

Engagement” showed 68% increase in academic grades of the students whose parents
undergone the intervention. It is resulted to raised self esteem, increased motivation and
engagement, and importantly, raised aspirations.
Project KaSiNa will increase academic performance of students though the parents’
engagement in their school tasks collaboratively. The selected pupils will be provided additional
activities from the subject teachers that will be done at home with the help of the parents. Each
homework has return slip that will be signed by the parent as s proof that they participated in the
said activity. The grades of the students from second quarter will be compared from the first
quarter. An increase in grade will somehow prove that the engagement of the parents is a great
help in the success of heir child’s academic performance.

18
IV. RESEARCH METHODS
• The research will be participated by selected 21 students Grade 2 students.

• There will be everyday take home activities that will be worked by the
parents and students collaboratively. Homework slip signed by parent will be
surrendered to the adviser the next day. Summative tests and performance
tasks will also be signed by the parents. Twice a month follow-up will be done
through conference between students, parents and adviser. If not possible,
home visitation will be done.

•First and Second quarterly grades will be compared and analyzed.

•Individual interview will also be conducted.

V. Plans for Dissemination and Advocacy

This study will be disseminated through Learning Action Cell

(LAC), Parent-Teacher Conference, and through letters. This
study is planned to be utilized by the Second grading period
