How do we do Safety Visits?

 Allocate at least 30 minutes. Dedicate it to HSE

 Decide which area to visit - where is the activity?

 Choose a time when people are working

 Maximum two visitors - the visiting manager and line

supervisor of the area

 Set a Good Example by wearing all PPE required and

following all safety rules
Observation
 Stop for 10 - 30 secs. and observe the activity
 Concentrate on people working, not on things
 Be alert for the ‘evaporative act’
 ABBI - look Above, Below, Behind, Inside
 Question 'Why?' and 'What if....?'
 Use all your senses - smell, hearing
 Think of solutions to the problems you see
 Recognize good working practices
 Do not take notes while observing and discussing
Discussion
 The main aim of the discussion is to get the
workers to recognize their own unsafe acts, and to
commit themselves to working safely.

 Don’t rush. Take time to put the workers at ease.

 Be open and direct, but don’t challenge or blame.
 Question and discuss. Keep listening. Don’t lecture.
 Encourage the workers to identify the hazards and to
suggest safer ways of working.
Discussion (contd.)
 Commend safe working practices.
 Correct the unsafe acts and conditions at once if
possible. ‘Actions speak louder than words’.

 Encourage workers to discuss their safety concerns and

to offer their ideas.

 Write down their concerns and ideas and make sure that
they are followed up and the outcome fed back.

 Thank workers for their participation.

Reporting and Follow-up
 Write brief notes of the observations and agreed actions
 Categorize the observations - checklists can help
 Make sure there is feedback to the persons visited

HSE Department:

 Analyse the Safety Visit reports to identify recurring

weaknesses, and additional HSE programmes needed
 Set the Safety Standards based on International standards
and Shell advice
 Audit the quality of Safe Visits and need for further training
in hazard recognition and observation/discussion techniques
