• EARLIEST CIVILISATIONS IN INDUS VALLEY WAS DISCOVERED IN 1856

ARCHITECTURE STYLE AND CONSTRUCTION

- The Indus Valley Civilisation (IVC) was a Bronze Age


civilisation in the northwestern regions of South Asia.
- Situated on bank of indus River .
- First site to be discovered.
- Time Period from 3300 BCE to 1300 BCE.
- -The life in the indus cities gives the impression of “a democratic
bourqeols economy” like that of ancient crete
- Trending Society.
MOHANJODARO

The city had two planned areas:


- At the western end of the site is
an area known as the Citadel. This
area of the city was built on top of
a mound of brick. Several large
building and structures on the
citadel mound suggest that this
area may have been use for public
gatherings ,religious activities or
important administrative
activities.
- In the citadel structure like
granary, marketplace and great
bath are found
- - The city proper which is lower in
elevation where the house are
same and built against the street
- The street are done in grid
pattern
Unique feature of the Indus valley
Civilisation:
- The structure of the houses has toilet conneted to a centralized
system.
- Sanitation system is be planned and orgenized by a centralized
government.
- Unoform size of bricks everywhere
- Town planning

HARAPPA’S Granary and Wells
GRANARY
The granary was the largest
structure in Mohenjodaro,
and in Harappa there were
about six granaries or storehouses.
These were used for storing grain.

Town Hall: A Palace-like building that looked like an assembly
hall for the city government or for people to meet.

Lower Town: This was the residential area where the common
people lived.

Streets: The roads and streets intersected at right angles, with


covered drains along the road. Houses were built on either side
of the roads and streets.
Drainage System: The drainage system of the
Harappan cities was the best known to the
world in ancient times. The brickwork
prevented the dirty water from leaking.
Wooden screens stopped the solid wastes
from being washed away with the water.
Drains were built on either side of the roads.
They were covered with stones which could
be removed in order to clean them.

Houses: The houses varied in size. Some


might have had two storeys. The houses
were made of burnt bricks. Most of the
houses had a central courtyard, a well, a
bathing area and a kitchen
