DESKTOP ENVIRONMENT,

WINDOWS AND FOLDERS

My Computer – this give access to any
saved in the computer like hard drives,
floppy drives, CD-ROM drives, files, program
and documents.
Recycle Bin– This is a temporary storage
place for deleted or erased files. It can
also be used for recovering accidentally
deleted files.
My Network Place– This provides easy
access to network resources if the PC is
connected to a network.
Web Browser– It is used to surf the Internet.
If the computer is connected to the
Internet, this is usde to enter and
navigate various Web sites.

Start Button Task Bar System Tray


Start Button – It is a button found on the
lower left part of the desktop.
Task Bar – It is a rectangular bar found at
the lower part of the desktop. It contain
the start button and show what
programs or documents are currently
open.
Quick Launch Bar – This provides an easy way
to launch a program with just one click.
Wallpaper – This is the background design
of the desktop. You can customize the
wallpaper according to your preference.
System Tray - In the system tray, This is
where you can find the icons belonging
to some of the programs that are
currently running. It also hides/shows
used icons.
Screen Saver – A graphical display that
neutralize your screen when not in use.
This will appear depending the time you
set.
Window– is a rectangular area, which is framed
by a border that display data, programs,
documents or information about application.

Switching a Window

OPENING A WINDOW
Do any of the following:
• Start> all programs > (Find the specific
window to open)
• You can click on the specific button symbol
on the task bar. (if available)
CLOSING A WINDOW

Do any of the following:


• Click File Tab > Click Close
• Click the Close Button
• Hold and Press Alt + C to close
• Hold and Press Alt + X to exit the window or
program.
Minimizing, Restoring, Maximizing, Resizing and
Moving a Window

Minimize – It move the window to the task bar.


Maximize – To increase the size of window in full
size.

Restore – To decrease the size of window so that


you can display 2 or more window in the
desktop.
Resizing a Window
Click Restore Button > Drag the corner of
the window provided that the mouse
pointer is in double headed arrow.

Moving a Window

Click Restore Button > Drag on the title bar


area.

Hierarchy of folder is the organization of folders
(directories) on a hard disk, which is drive-folder-file.

Disk or drive - upper hierarchical level and is known as the


root
Folder – a virtual container within a digital file system, in
which groups of computer files and other folders can
be kept and organized

Subfolder – a folder inside another folder
File - a block of arbitrary information, or resource for
storing information, which is available to a computer
program and is usually based on some kind
of storage device.
Usually associated with different file name
extension according to the programs installed
in your computer. Fig. 11.1 A kind of file

Filename extension - a unique three-letter extension


designed for each program such as .doc for document file,
.exe for executable file, etc. (see table 1 for the lists of
common file name extensions)
