Definition of the
eyes
Definition
The eye is a balloon-shaped
structure responsible for detecting
light and converting it into nerve
impulses in order to carry out
vision.
It is one of the most important
organs of the senses, is in even
number in the upper part of
the face.

Functions of the

Eye functions
| Cornea: Allows light refraction.

Iris: Control through the pupil, the amount of light entering.

Pupil: It allows to regulate the amount of light that enters the eye.

Crystalline: This lens helps focus light and images on the retina.

Aqueous humor: It allows the eye pressure to remain constant.

Sclerotic: It covers the eyeball, giving it its characteristic white color and
protecting the internal structures.

Conjunctiva: It contributes to the lubrication and disinfection of the eyeball

as it produces tears and mucus.

Choroid: It is a layer of blood vessels and connective tissue.

Retina: The true receiving organ of the visual system.

Optic nerve: A set of fibers that transmit the light impulses of the retina to the
cerebral optic chiasma.
Conjunctivitis is an irritation or
CONJUNCTIVITIS: inflammation of the conjunctiva that covers
the white part of the eyeball.
It can be caused by allergies or a bacterial or
viral infection.

 Red eyes.
SYMPTOMS :  Burning eyes.
 Itchy eyes.
 Eye pain.
 Crying eyes.
 Swollen eyelids.
 High sensitivity to light.
TREATMENT PREVENTION

Cold compresses.  Wash your hands frequently with

Artificial tears. soap and warm water.
Medications that control inflammation.  Avoid touching or rubbing your
Anti-inflammatory drops eyes.
 Avoid sharing makeup, contact
lenses and glasses.
Bacterial Keratitis

Bacterial keratitis is an infection and

inflammation of the cornea. Bacterial
keratitis progresses rapidly and corneal
destruction may be complete in 24 - 48
hours with some of the more virulent
bacteria.

It may involve the center of

the cornea or the peripheral
part of the cornea (that
portion closest to the sclera)
or both.
Symptoms of Bacterial keratitis
The symptoms of keratitis usually include : Pain

Blurring of vision.

Reduced vision

Light sensitivity

Sensitivity to light may also be present.

Tearing or discharge
from the eye.

To the observer, the eye may appear red,

watery, and if the cornea has extensive
keratitis, the normally clear cornea may
look grey or have white to grey areas.
TREATMENT
Initial treatment should be with a broadspectrum antibiotic to cover both Gram-
positive and Gramnegative pathogens. Topical fluoroquinolones for example :
ofloxacin, levofloxacin or moxifloxacin are well tolerated and effective .

Adjunctive use of cold compresses will also help to reduce inflammation.

Dual therapy with fortified 5% cefuroxime and 1.5%.

The gentamicin is also effective but less well tolerated.
