MULTIPLYING

POLYNOMIALS
Objectives:
1.Perform multiplication of polynomials:
a)monomial by monomial
b)monomial by polynomial with
more than one term
2.Participate actively in class discussion
and activity
The exponent
tells us how
many times the
exponent base is
multiplied by

Product law of exponent

𝑎+𝑏
(𝑥 )(𝑥 ) = 𝑥
𝑎 𝑏 𝑥
Exampl

es: (𝑥 ) (𝑥 ) = 𝑥
(2𝑥) (6𝑥) = 12𝑥 2

(4𝑥 )(−2𝑥 ) = −8𝑥

(−2𝑥 )(−5𝑥 )= 10𝑥
Kinds of Polynomials
Monomial- a polynomial with one term,
a product of a number and variables
Examples: 2x , 4xy and 3x²y²

Binomial - a polynomial of two terms

Examples: x + 3y , 2x – 4yz and 2x² + 1

Trinomial – a polynomial of three terms

Example: 3x² - 2x - 1
Find the area of a rectangle
given the following dimensions.
1. length = 8x, width = 3x
2. length = 10x, width = -5x
3. length = 3x, width = 2x + 2
4. length = 2x, width = 3x - 1
