China’s economic presence in the region

South Africa
• Africa’s most developed economy, cooperation within BRICS.
• Strong ties with both Zimbabwe and China: China is South Africa’s 1st export
destination, 1st import destination. South Africa is Zimbabwe’s 2nd export destination,
1st import destination.
• The largest stock of Chinese FDI in Africa.
Botswana
• 2018 – Areas identified in the MoU: agriculture, manufacturing and processing,
commerce and logistics, tourism and human resource development.
• 2019 – “Botswana regards China as a strategic development partner and hopes to see
the country’s enhanced participation in Botswana’s economic diversification agenda.”
Zambia
• China is Zambia’s 2nd export destination, 4th import destination.
• More than 600 Chinese enterprises operating in the country, with a total investment of
more than 3.8 billion $.
• Revitalization of TAZARA railway.
Mozambique
• China is Mozambique’s 2nd export destination, 2nd import destination.
• Preferential loans and direct investment from Chinese state and private companies.
• Maputo-Katembe bridge (2014-2018, 3 km long, 785 million $).

1.The relevance of foreign aid
In the context of economic globalization, poverty has become a
"systemic risk", a breeding ground for terrorism, armed conflicts and
other problems.

2.motives of China's foreign aid


2.1.it is an important means for China to achieve its diplomatic and
strategic goals, strengthen foreign trade and investment, and expand its
international influence.
2.2Through foreign aid, while helping developing countries overcome
difficulties in their economic, and achieve economic and social
development, China has also opened up vast markets for foreign
resources and commodities, and gain huge economic benefits
