Introduction:
• Head loss refers to the measurement of
energy dissipated in a system due to friction.
It accounts for the totality of
energy losses due to the length of a pipe and
those due to the function of fittings, valves
and other system structures.
• It is measured in ‘metre’
• Mainly of two types: Major & Minor losses
• Ht = Hmajor + Hminor
Major losses:
Minor Losses:
• Due to sudden expansion:

•Due to contraction:

• Due to fittings:
Reduction of pipeline losses:
• Increase the pipe diameter
• Minimize the pipe length
• Minimize the number of elbows, tees, valves,
fittings and other obstructions in the piping
system. If a corner must be turned, a gentle
bend is better than a sharp, 90-degree turn.
• Reduce the surface roughness of the pipe
Conclusion:
• During the time of pipeline design we have to
consider all the factors such that head loss
can be minimized.
