INTRODUCTION
 The term documentation, in constructivist early childhood

education used to mean the records of knowledge, skills

and ability of the children in their classroom.

 Constructivist teachers always observe, document and

interpret.
Introduction…
 Through documentation in constructivist early
childhood education enables policy makers, school
administrators, parents as well as community
members to assess or to know how well children are
doing in our schools so as to increase attention to
children achievements.
What do we document?
 what child knows?

 What they do?

 How they reason?

 How the activities and instructional practices facilitate

children learning?
ways of documenting
There are various ways of documentation in early childhood
education, those are the following;
 Webbing a map
 Panels
 Log book (for daily updates)
 Portfolio
 Checklist
 Video camera
 Observation
 Guttman scale
Panels
 This is a flat sheet that forms a distinct section or
component of something, a constructivist teacher use
panel to document children’s work sample, teacher
and children’s drawing, photographs and classroom
conversation transcripts.
Example of panel…
Observation
 method of writing, listening, asking question and analyzing the
observed words and actions of children as they interact.

 A constructivist teachers can use structured and un -structured

interviews children’s work samples, videotapes of children
action.

 A constructivist, teachers can identify next steps and changes

that need to be made materials.
Logbook/ Journal
 Reggio approach believes the ongoing home journal is document
that allows for on going writing dialogues between teacher and
parents .
 The constructivist teacher will write the paragraph or two
paragraphs in journal every week in order to provide information,
communication and guiding children’s development.
 sharing continuous dialogues the school and family strengthen the
shared responsibility inherent in the educational process.

checklist
 Checklists are the assessment tools that set out specific
criteria which education and students may use to measure
skills development and progress.

 checklist provides a convenient and efficient means of

recording children’s acquisition of conventional
checklist…
 knowledge such as knowing the names of the letters, and
numerals as well as other kind of knowledge.
Guttman scale
 Is scales which order items from easy to hard and if they
meet certain criteria, permit assigning a scale score that
reflect a child particular developmental level
Webbing a map
 webbing a map of important ideas and their relationship is
an effective technique for documenting children's ideas
and understanding, their question, even their suggestions.
example of webbing a map…
Portfolio
 Portfolio is a set of pieces of creative work that collected to
show potential activities ,can be used to recording the child’s
process of learning, what the child has learned and how
she/he has gone about learning.

 Portfolio is one among the criteria which show how

constructivist’s teachers can use portfolio to document
children’s works
Portfolio…
 The teachers may find themselves with an overload of
data affiliated to children mental ability.

 The following are the purposes of portfolio

documentation as
Portfolio…
 Enable children to participate in assessing their own work

 Keep track of individual children overall performance

 Can stimulate a shift in classroom and education policies

Video cameras
 Is a camera used to make electronic motion pictures.

 It captures moving images and sound.

 Teachers can record observation in form of narratives or

anecdotes.
video cameras…
 Video cameras allows teachers to videotape children as
they engage in classroom activities, conflict resolutions,
and discussions.

 Constructivist teacher use video cameras to record

different activities done by the children in the indoor and
outdoor learning environment
IMPORTANCE OF DOCUMENTATION IN EARLY
CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
 It helps teachers to reflect on work in progress and
discussion surrounded it.

 It helps the parents and caregivers to become aware of

their children’s performance and experiences in school
setting.

 Documentation play a vital role on highlights the issue or

difficult emerged during the learning process
Importance of documentation in early childhood
education…
 Through documentation process, may encourage
pupils to undertake their activities.

 It provide a kind of ongoing planning and

evaluation.

 Documentation provide information about pupil’s

learning and their progress.
Purposes of the documentation in early
childhood education
 To make learning visible such as photographs,
transcript of conversation and artifacts
displayed

 To enhance children learning. Through

continues assessment done by the teacher in
the given class
Purposes of the documentation in early
childhood education…
 To inform families on how children are going through the day
and what they did for example prepare portfolio inform
development of the children

 To show development progress. The teachers observe

each child in variety of areas of development ( such as
social learning, emotional, cognitive, language and
mortar).
Purposes of the documentation in early
childhood education…
.
To ensure children developing and how they are
developing. For example collaboration with other
students, a children's may develop language expression

To reflect on their math and science learning and

connect them to Future lesson. For help the audience
understand how children learn and proceeds with next
sent ion
Challenges of documentation in
ECE
Some children reject the approach because is learner
centered approach since learners prefer to be provided
each and everything

Many teachers are not willing to practice documentation

because makes them to work hard.

Documentation takes long time to be accomplished

properly.
Challenges of documentation in ECE…
 Documentation process is limited to small class ;

i. The method can not be used in a populated class as it slows the

implementation and general achievements of the goals set.

ii. Teacher can not manage visiting the whole class identifying
the learning's difficulties and how to meet children needs of all
learners individually for instance in many Tanzania pre schools
where have classes with 100 pupils
Challenges of documentation….
 It high affected by teacher biasness;

i. Information may not be documented is relay on teachers

interest either to document or other wise. this happens when
teacher favor some children, when they are perform better the
data can be kept for own sake
conclusion
 Constructivist teachers should document all
children words and actions so as to facilitate the
assessment of children achievement in all aspects
of child learning such as cognitive thinking,
psychomotor as well as affective aspect of child
learning.
