DEFINITIONS
- Sport:
- an activity involving physical exertion and
skill in which an individual or team
competes against another or others for
entertainment

- Sociology:
- The science of human society and of social
relations, organization and change. The study of
the beliefs, values, etc. of societal groups
DEFINITIONS
Society- a very large-scale collection of social
relationships

Culture: - a society’s shared set of symbols and their


meanings embodied in beliefs, values and norms

Psychology: - the scientific study of the human mind


and its functions, esp. those affecting behavior in a
given context.
DEFINITIONS

MORALS:
concerned with or adhering to the code of interpersonal
behavior that is considered right or acceptable in a
particular society

ETHICS:
a set of moral principles, esp. ones relating to or
affirming a specified group, field, or form of conduct
WHY STUDY ‘SPORT’?

CCES(Canadian Center for Ethics in Sport Survey revealed that:

- 92% of Canadians feel that community level


sports have a positive influence on the
development of youth
- This is Second ONLY to Family
We cannot deny that Sport and P.A. is an
Integral component to our society

Economic Impact:
- Money spent on athletic clothing and equipment, gym
memberships, attending sport events, gambling, etc..
- Professional Sports & Sport Tourism

Media Impact:
- Cable networks have channels devoted entirely to sports (e.g. TSN,
Sportsnet, The Score)
Political Impact:
- The Olympic Games (political propaganda), Nationalism

Educational Impact:
- Included in elementary and secondary school curriculum
- Extracurricular Sports Programs/ Teams

Cultural Impact:
- Sport is a theme in art, novels and movies
- Sports are an integral part of cultural heritages
The Current State of Sport
and Physical Activity Today
- 54% of Canadian adults overweight/
17% obese (2014 Stats Can)
- 56% of Canadian Youth aged (12-19)
were physically inactive (2001 Can.
Community Health Survey)
- 82% may not have been active enough
to meet international guidelines for
optimal growth and development (2001
CCHS)
Physical Activity Today
- At least half of the youth and children in
Canada do not participate in adequate
amounts of physical activity for optimal
growth and development (Stats Can,
2002)
- POSSIBILITY THAT GENERATIONS FOLLOWING
US WILL NOT OUTLIVE THEIR PARENTS
