Performing a Human Posture Analysis
Overview
Human posture analysis focuses specifically on examining how human posture
can affect task performance by analyzing the following:

Local Posture
Global Posture
Preferred Angles
Comfort and Strength

Human Posture analysis allows you to both quantitatively and qualitatively analyze
several aspects of human posture. Posture can be examined, scored, and optimized
to determine the optimal operator comfort and performance throughout a complete
range of motion during the task. In addition to the various postures, you can also
analyze the effects of posture on individual segments of the manikin.

When you have finished analyzing posture data, you can create and save comfort
and strength libraries that can be reused throughout various applications.

Using the Human Posture Analysis Workbench

The Human Posture Analysis workbench provides the following tools for
analyzing manikin posture:

Angular Limitations Toolbar – this toolbar allows you to set restrictions on the upper and lower limits
of movement (in degrees) on a particular segment of the manikin.
Preferred Angles Toolbar – this toolbar allows you to create or edit preferred angles within the whole
manikin range of motion. For example, preferred angles can refer to areas where the manikin would
be more comfortable or stronger or be in a safer posture.
Saving Manikin Attributes Toolbar – this toolbar allows you to save the preferred angles that you have
created.
Postural Score Panel Toolbar – this toolbar allows you to review postural score results in a variety of
ways.

1 Launch V5 Product.

Load the Human Posture Analysis workbench. You will not notice a change until the

3 From the PPR tree, select a manikin and click on the segment you would like to analyze.

Editing the Angular Limitations – Procedure

4 From the Angular Limitations toolbar, click the Edits the Angular Limitations button.

5 Click on the appropriate segment of the manikin in the PPR tree.

NOTE: You can manipulate any of the three

degrees of freedom (DOF1, 2, or 3) from
each of the buttons on the Angular
Limitations toolbar.

Editing the Angular Limitations – Procedure

Double click on either of the Limit Arrows on the manikin (green or yellow). You will see
6 the Angular Limitations dialog box.

7 To edit the lower or upper limits, check the Activate Manipulation checkbox.

Make the necessary changes to the upper or lower limit values. If you want to reset the
8 values back to their original state, press the Reset button.
When you are finished, press the Close button. Also, deactivate the Angular Limitations
9 button by clicking on it so that it is no longer orange in color.

Creating and Editing Preferred Angles – Procedure

1 Select a segment of the manikin for which you would like to edit the angle of Motion.

2 From the Angular Limitations toolbar, click the Edits Preferred Angles button.

In the shaded area of the manikin, right-click and select Add. You will see the Preferred
3 Angles dialog box.

4 Change the values as necessary and click the Close button.

5 When you are finished, deactivate the Edits Preferred Angles button by clicking it again.

To save the new angle, from the Catalog toolbar, click the Save Manikin’s
6 Attributes in Catalog button.

7 In the Save Human Catalog dialog box, click the Open button.

Save the catalog in the Catalog folder. When you press Open, you will see the Save in
8 Human Catalog dialog box.

In the Title field, type the appropriate name, click on the appropriate segment of the
9 manikin, and press the Save button.

10 When you are finished, press the Close button.

Displaying the Postural Score – Procedure

From the Postural Score toolbar, click the Opens the Postural Score Panel button. You
1 will see the Postural Score Analysis dialog box.
From this window, you can choose
which degree of freedom (DOF) to
display, whether you want to display
results in either List or Chart form,
and you can apply filters as
necessary.

You can also create a customize joint

using a set of upper body segments,
including the spine and head.

The layout of the Postural Score Analysis dialog box might change depending on
the various selections you make.

You can select from

the following filters: Spine and Hand:

Select Whole Spine to score all vertebrae as a single element.

Select Each Vertebras to score each vertebra individually.
Select Whole Hand to regroup each finger into a global element.
Select Each Fingers to score each finger individually.

The List and Chart Display:

Both of these display options provide information regarding the following:

Global Score – this item is the total posture score for all segments combined.
Current Score – this item is the average score of all items in the current list.
Selected Score – this item is the posture score for all selected items on the multi-list.
Favorites – this item is customizable and displays all preferred angles, even if they
have never been edited.

If you choose the List display, scores will be displayed as percentages in list form. If you
choose the Chart display, scores will be displayed in chart form.

2 Make your display sections as appropriate and press Close.

You can customize the color schemes of Charts by selecting Tools / Options / Ergonomics
3 Design & Analysis / Human Posture Analysis / Postural Score tab.

Make the appropriate changes in the

4 Options dialog box and press OK.

You can customize individual segments

of the manikin by selecting the segment
5 in the PPR tree, right-clicking and
selecting Properties.

In the Analysis field, select Postural

7 click either Apply or OK.

Scope: You will use the Human Posture Analysis tools to accomplish various
tasks.
Conditions: V5 and Human Builder workbench must be open.

In this exercise you will:

Set, edit, and save preferred angles.
Display and customize postural score results.

 Do It Yourself

1. Open the HBProduct5.CATProcess file.

2. Load the Human Posture Analysis workbench.

3. On the Male Analysis manikin, select the right thigh.

4. Using the #1 Degree of Freedom, change the upper limit to 90 degrees.

5. Add this new preferred angle. In addition, change the color of the angle to green, set the
score to 10, and set the Maximum limit to 50%.
6. Repeat this procedure (naming the new angle Pref. angle 3), and change the color of the
angle to red, set the score to 2, set the Maximum limit to 113%, and set the Minimum limit
to 50%.
7. Save these preferred angles using the title Preferred Angles.
