My music presentation about the instrument I want to


play.

HISTORY OF THE GUITAR
-When was it made?
The guitar is so old that nobody knows when it was made. But there are Stone carvings from
ancient Babylonia that depics people playing a guitar like instrument, 3300 years ago.
-Where does the name come from?
The name originally came from the ancient Greek Word Kithara. The Moors then came to Spain
where it became guitarra. It was then when the name was adopted into English, French, Italian
etc.
Who made it?
The guitar is so old nobody knows who made it. But the modern guitar that we know of today
was made by Antonio de Torres Jurado in the 1850s, which remains unchanged today.
-What kinds of guitars are there?
There are two main kinds of guitars. Acoustic and Electric. Acoustic is the older one which does
not need an amplifier, its hollow and has a hole in it. So the sound that comes from plucking the
strings echoes inside and comes out as music. While the electric guitar uses an amplifier and
was made in the 1930s.
WHAT IS IT MADE OF?
• Guitars are almost always made of Wood. Typically made of Ash, Mahogany
Maple, Basswood, Agathis, Alder, Poplar, Walnut, Spruce and Holly Wood.
The strings are made of nylon an metal.

HOW IS IT TUNED?
• Guitars are tuned from the lowest sounding string to the highest sounding
string. You tune the guitar by turning the things that are on the headstock
(the stubby things on the head of the stick.) The six strings are, E-A-D-G-B-E.
WHO MADE IT FAMOUS?
• The guitar was popularized when Antonio de Torres Jurado created the
modern guitar. He was an important person when it came to the history and
creation of the guitar. Les Paul and Leo Fender were some of the first people
to play the electric guitar with other musicians and popularized the electric
guitar.
