NATURE & PURPOSES
OF ASSESSMENT
ASSESSMENT OF LEARNING
1. What is Assessment of Learning?
2. Differentiate Test, Measurement, Assessment &
Evaluation
3. Kinds of Assessment
a) Traditional,
b) Alternative
c) Authentic)
4. Purposes of Assessment
a) Assessment FOR Learning
b) Assessment OF Learning
c) Assessment AS Learning
EXERCISE: ANSWER THE FOLLOWING
QUESTIONS FROM DIFFERENT SUBJECT TOPICS

1. What is the longest word in English language?

2. Enumerate and give example for 3 Newton’s Law of Motion.

3. Solve the algebraic expression: 5(- 3x - 2) - (x – 3)^2

ASSESSMENT
WHAT IS ASSESSMENT?
It determine whether or not the course’s
learning objectives have been met

“Educators need to focus on: What to teach; How to

teach it; and How to assess it.”
- Greenstein, 2012; Schmoker, 2011
CLASSROOM ASSESSMENT
IS THEREFORE:
The observation of students in the process of
learning and collection of frequent feedback on
the student’s learning.
It helps teachers obtain useful feedback on what, how much and how
well the students are learning.

TEST, MEASUREMENT,
ASSESSMENT & EVALUATION
In every class instruction, for the teacher to know whether or
not the students learned:
1. Teacher creates a test. (TEST)
2. When the teacher checks thru test if the students have learned
(Measurement)
3. A series of test is conducted /recorded for continuous follow-
up of the learner’s performance (Assessment)
4. And on those data, a judgment will be made whether or not
the student can advance to the next level (Evaluation)
WHAT IS A TEST?

It is an INSTRUMENT designed to measure any

characteristics quality, ability, knowledge or skills.

It is comprised of ITEMS in the area it is designed to

measure.
WHAT IS MEASUREMENT?

It is the process of QUANTIFYING the degree to which someone or

something possesses a given trait.
WHAT IS ASSESSMENT?

• It is the process of GATHERING and ORGANIZING quantitative

or qualitative data into an interpretable form to have a basis for
judgment or decision-making.

• It is pre-requisite to evaluation
WHAT IS EVALUATION?

Process of systematic interpretation, analysis, appraisal or judgment of

the worth of organized data as basis for decision-making. It involves
judgment about the desirability of changes in students.

ASSESSMENT
KINDS OF
ASSESSMENT:
KINDS OF ASSESSMENT:
1. Traditional Assessment
- refers to standardized testing that uses questions with a limited
number of answer choices. It includes multiple choice, true or false and
some short answer responses.
- Uses Paper-And-Pen objective test
One of the primary benefits of traditional assessment is the ease with
which administrators and admissions professionals can analyze and
compare student scores. Standardized testing that relies entirely on
quantifiable responses produces an assessment that is easy to score. Test
makers can categorize questions to determine which areas students
excel in and which they have difficulty with. Students' results are
comparable over time and across a large, diverse group of students.
Traditional assessment methods have the disadvantage of lacking real-
world context. Students answer questions one by one without the need
to apply long-term critical reasoning skills. They also lack chances to
demonstrate their reasoning skills despite a lack of knowledge about a
question's specific subject matter.
2. Alternative Assessment
- Alternative assessments are used to determine what students can and
cannot do, in contrast to what they do or do not know.
- Uses methods other than Pen-And-Paper objective test which
includes performance test, projects, portfolios, journals, essays and the
like.

3. Authentic Assessment
- Simulates real-life situations
- Demo teaching
- Driving test

PURPOSES OF CLASSROOM
ASSESSMENT
• Assessment FOR Learning

• Assessment OF Learning

• Assessment AS learning
ASSESSMENT FOR LEARNING
Done before and/or during instruction

Placement Assessment: done prior to instruction

- purpose is to assess the needs of the learners to have a basis in
planning for a relevant instruction
- Measures entry behavior (Ex: Pre-test)

Formative Assessment: done during instruction

- this is where teachers continuously monitor the students level of
attainment in learning objective.
- Monitors learning progress

Diagnostic Assessment: done during an instruction

- determines students recurring or persistent difficulties
- Identifies causes of learning problems
ASSESSMENT OF LEARNING
Done after instruction

- it certifies what students know and can do and their

level of proficiency or competency
- - It’s results reveal whether or not instructions have
successfully achieved the curriculum outcomes
- Ex: Summative Test (Summative Assessment)
- Periodical Examination
ASSESSMENT AS LEARNING
Done for teachers to understand and perform well their
role of assessing FOR and OF Learning. It requires
teachers to undergo on how to asses learning and be
equipped with the competencies needed in performing
their work as assessors.
Ex: Trainings & Seminars
ASSESSMENT FOR, OF AND
AS LEARNING
For- before and/or during class instruction

OF- after class instruction

As- for the teachers to be equipped with the competencies needed on

their work as assessors
EFFECTS OF
ASSESSMENT
EFFECTS OF ASSESSMENT
Student Learning
Assessment is a key component of learning because it helps
students learn. When students are able to see how they are doing in a
class, they are able to determine whether or not they understand
course material. Assessment can also help motivate students. If students
know they are doing poorly, they may begin to work harder.
Teaching
Just as assessment helps students, assessment helps teachers.
Frequent assessment allows teachers to see if their teaching has been
effective. Assessment also allows teachers to ensure students learn what
they need to know in order to meet the course's learning objectives.
