Parivaar: A family for Destitute children

Introduction about PARIVAAR
• It is social enterprise which is founded by Vinayak
Lohani(2004).
• Objective of Parivaar
-Providing familial atmosphere to the destitute
children
-Equipping them with right and useful education
• The Board of Governors included Vinayak, some
professors of IIMC and some experienced socially
concerned citizens.
The beginning…
• Initially ,formed at IIMC to undertake social
initiatives.
• In 2004, It was registered as a society under the
West Bengal Society’s Act.
• The first centre of Parivaar was located in
Bonogram, a village in south suburb of Kolkata.
• They have started with 7 children from- street
children, children from crisis families, platform
children as well as children of prostitutes.
The Man Leading the mission
• Vinayak, Son of an IAS officer and former Chief Election
Commissioner of Madhya Pradesh, was brought up in
Bhopal.
• Graduated from IIT in 2000, was picked up by Infosys
• CAT- IIMC but he wanted to leave all and become a
Sanyasi.
• Regularly discussing philosophy, spirituality, religion ,
social activities and leadership.
• In IIMC started Parivaar club and focused teaching
illiterate workers in campus
The Man Leading the mission
• Organized health club in IIMC campus.
• Influenced Vivekananda and Gandhi values
• He Wrote articles in Sulekha, Times of India
and Mid-day.
• He came in touch with an alumnus of IIMC ,
who headed the Rotary Club.
• Local person, John Das and Scholarship by
Rotary Club - helped starting initiative.
The Idea-Generation Phase
• After the school scholarship initiative, Vinayak
did not know what to do.
• He was looking for ideas and opportunities.
• Dropping out placements to help people.
• He was discuss his idea with friends and some
NGOs.
• He met many social entrepreneurs and also
visited various NGOs.
The Idea-Generation Phase
• 40000 children died everyday in developing
countries. Out of these, 10,000 were from
India; most of these deaths were of destitute
children.
• Supportive friends and IIMC professors.
• Core Committee of 8-10 research students
was formed to discuss how the idea could be
implemented and prepare a concrete proposal
Starting the Venture
• To get continuous intellectual support and inputs,
Vinayak included Professors from IIMC and others
from NGO in Parivaar’s board of governors.
• Poor response from corporate and hence funded
from its part time job of coaching.
• He visited a few homes for starting the centre and
to understand their functioning, condition of
inmate as well as legal requirements and
administrative problems in running the centres.
Starting the Venture
• A plan was worked out and the centre was called
Parivaar- the same name of the Parivaar club at
IIMC.
• The core committee members was decided that –
-Best possible education
-Interaction with world; Hence students go to
local school and stay in Parivaar.
• Oct 03, Parivaar registered under West Bengal
Societies Act
The first Parivaar centre
• John Das, who was a local and knew the local conditions
well ,chose as the first employee of Parivaar.
• Oct 03, rented a premise in Bonogram.(50 children
capacity)
• Visited streets, villages, rail stations, NGOs to get children
for Parivaar.(within month there were 30 children)
• Shifted focus to corporate fund raising.
• ‘Support a child´ campaign started
To educate one child cost of Rs.12,300 for a year
23 batchmates of vinayak contributed to the project.
Running the centre
• Focus on systems and processes in place.
• Support from businessmen also started coming.
• Teachers were recruited for after –school education.
• A local Community leaders were consulted for
active support and inputs.
• Regular interactions with donors, stakeholders and
board meetings to take important decisions.
• It was decided to give Holistic and value-education
along with rules and regulations were laid down
Running the centre
• Separated boys and girls in different building.
• Parivaar and Vinayak received full-page coverage
in Outlook magazine.
• Parivaar has come up with the grace of god. Like-
minded spiritual individuals joined me as I
progressed. These individuals influenced others
around them And Parivaar evolved.
• He stopped asking for money after his initial
success with corporate organizations.
The Growth Stage
• A year passed since the start of the centre.
• Corporate sponsorship increased the flow of
money.
• Collaboration and interaction with various NGOs,
clubs, individuals and organizations gave Vinayak
a full confidence to go ahead with his future plan.
• Six Bighas(90,000 sq.ft.) of land was brought at
bakrahaat , funded by businessmen of Kolkata.
The campus was named as “Ashram.”
The Growth Stage
• The popularity of Parivaar was increase.
• Vinayak planned similar centres in other
locations.
• Emphasis on strengthening the existing
systems and delivering promises.
• To help south-east Tsunami victims..
