Clinical case discussion 1


A patient on tablet warfarin sodium 5 mg for deep
vein thrombosis developed urinary tract infection.
The investigation report revealed that the organisms
were sensitive to co-trimoxazole. The patient was
prescribed co-trimoxazole for 7 days. After 3 days
patient reported to his doctor with nasal bleed and
petechial haemorrhages.
1. Explain the cause for the symptoms.
2. What precaution should have been taken before administering the
antimicrobial agent?
3. Give further line of management of this patient.
