Varanasi (Banaras) is a city in the northern Indian state of Uttar
Pradesh dating to 11th century B.C. Regarded as the spiritual
capital of India, the city draws Hindu pilgrims who bathe in the
river Ganges river’s sacred waters and perform funeral rites. Along
the city’s winding streets are some 2000 temples including Kashi
Vishwanath temple, the “golden temple”, dedicated to the Hindu
god Shiva.

2000 temples around the city. Some of the famous
attractions among temples are :-
 BHU Vishwanath temple.

The banks of river ganga around the city known as
Ghats. There are many Ghats in Varanasi. But some
of the major attractions are :-
• Assi ghat.
• Manikarnika ghat.
• Harischandra ghat.
• Dashaswamedh ghat.
 BANARAS HINDU UNIVERSITY
Banaras Hindu University is a public central university
located in Varanasi. It was establish by Mahamana shri
Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya in 1916. with over 30,000
students residing inside the campus, it claims the title of
largest residential university in Asia.

The university’s main campus spread over 1300 acres was

built on the land donated by Kashi Naresh, the hereditary
ruler of Banaras.
• One of the eight classical dance form of India.
• It has three gharanas namely Jaipur, Lucknow &
Banaras.
• Banaras gharana is the oldest among them.
• It is also included in UN world heritage of intangible
culture.
• Oldest city in the world :- so very narrow roads.
• It is the part of the old Varanasi city like near Ghats
and Vishwanath temple.
• Too much congested hardly any sunlight reach those
roads due to heavy construction on both sides of the
road.
• Known for its embroidery work throughout the
world..
