IN 1971 - FORD BUILT AN AIRBAGS WITH
EXPERIMENTAL BASIS.
IN 1973 - GENERAL MOTORS FOLLOWED
WITH EXPERIMENTAL.
IN THE 1973-76 AIRBAGS WERE FIRST
IMPLEMENTED BY GM AND FORD IN
APPROXIMATELY 12,000 AUTOMOBILES TO
REPLACE SEAT BELTS.
IN 1998 DRIVER AND PASSENGER AIR BAGS
IN ALL CARS AND IN LIGHT TRUCKS AND
VANS BY 1999.

HOW IT WORKS
THERE IS A COLLISION FORCE EQUAL TO
RUNNING INTO A BRICK WALL AT 16 TO 24
KM PER HOUR.
A MECHANICAL SWITCH IS FLIPPED WHEN
THERE IS A MASS SHIFT THAT CLOSES AN
ELECTRICAL CONTACT, TELLING THE
SENSORS THAT A CRASH HAS OCCURRED.
THE SENSORS RECEIVE INFORMATION FROM
AN ACCELEROMETER BUILT INTO A
MICROCHIP.
THE SENSOR TELLS THE BAG TO INFLATE.

INFLATION
INFLATION SYSTEM REACTS SODIUM AZIDE
(NAN3) WITH POTASSIUM NITRATE (KNO3) TO
PRODUCE NITROGEN GAS.
HOT BLASTS OF THE NITROGEN INFLATE THE
AIRBAG AT A VELOCITY OF 200 MPH (322 KPH).

YOUR DRIVER AIRBAG GIVES YOU A CLEAR
MARGIN OF SAFETY.
• SMOKING A PIPE SHOULD BE AVOIDED WHILE
DRIVING.
• INJURIES SUCH AS HEARING DAMAGE, HEAD
