The Main Characteristics of Baroque Music

The Basso Continuo (Figured Bass) - Figured bass, or


thoroughbass, is a kind of musical notation in which
numerals and symbols indicate intervals, chords, and non-
chord tones that a musician playing piano, harpsichord,
organ, lute play in relation to the bass note that these
numbers and symbols appear above or below.

One mood throughout the entire piece.

Modes were replaced by the Major/Minor key system.

Many different forms are used (e.g. Binary, Fugue)

Many types of music, e.g. The Chorale, Opera, the Dance


Suite.

Energetic rhythms (Exuberance), long melodies, many


ornaments, contrasts (especially dynamics, but also in
timbres)
