Static Routing

edge router, also known as
an access router, is a lower-
capacity device that resides
at the boundary of a LAN and
connects it to a the public
internet or a private wide
area network (WAN) and/or

In some cases, routers is a combination of:

○ Dynamic Routing
○ Static Routing

Why use
Static
Routing?
Static routing provides advantages
and disadvantages over dynamic
routing, including:

6
Static routes - are most often used to connect
to a specific network or to provide a Gateway of Last
Resort for a stub network.

Default Static Routes:

○ When no other routes in the routing table match the

packet destination IP address. In other words, when
a more specific match does not exist. A common
use is when connecting a company's edge router to
the ISP network.
○ When a router has only one other router to which it
is connected. In this situation, the router is known as
a stub router.

7
Floating Static Routes:

○ Floating static routes are static routes

that have an administrative distance
greater than the administrative
distance of another static route or
dynamic routes. They are very useful
when providing a backup to a primary
link

8
How do you
troubleshoot a router?
1. Turn off the wireless function and
directly connect your computer to the
router with an Ethernet cable.
2. Reboot the computer and check for an
internet connection.
3. If there is still no internet connection
reboot the router and any modems in
use.

9
Troubleshoot a Missing
Route
Networks are subject to forces that can
cause their status to change quite often:
○ An interface fails
○ A service provider drops a connection
○ Links become oversaturated
○ An administrator enters a wrong
configuration
