Hindu worship is primarily an individual act rather than
a communal one, as it involves making personal
offerings to the deity. Worshippers repeat the names of
their favourite gods and goddesses, and repeat
mantras. Water, fruit, flowers and incense are offered to
God.
Hindus usually perform worship in temples or at home
to achieve some specific end or to integrate the body,
the mind, spirit and also to live a pure life in order to
help the performer reincarnate into a higher being.
At the shrine, Hindus make offerings to a murti. A murti is
a sacred stautue of God, or a god or goddess.
The Hindu building for
communal worship is called Mandir (Hindu Temple). The
temples are dedicated to different gods and are the focus
of religious life.
