MEAT AND POULTRY PROCESSING
PLANTS

Water supply shall be ample and potable, with adequate

pressure and facilities for its distribution in the plant, and its
protection against contamination and pollution
A supply of hot water shall be available
Hose connections with stream and water mixing valves or
hot water hose connection shall be provided at locations
throughout the plant
GARBAGE COLLECTION CENTERS AND
FACILITIES

the water supply shall be ample with facilities for its own
distribution. An ample supply of water at not less than 180 F
Hose connection with steam and water mixing valves of hot
and cold water hose connections shall be provided at
locations throughout the building and at loading and vehicle
cleaning slabs
ILLEGAL CONNECTIONS

• No unclean water pipe shall be connected to any potable water supply piping.
No potable water piping system connection to any tank, receptor, equipment,
or plumbing fixture shall be installed to allow unclean water to enter the
potable piping system
• No unclean water piping system shall be connected to a potable water piping
system unless provided with an backflow prevention device approved for the
prevention of a potential hazard
BACKFLOW PREVENTION DEVICES
• Air gap – to comply with the minimum air gap to allow
backflow protection
• Atmospheric vacuum breaker – shall be consists of a body,
a checking member, and an atmospheric opening
• Hose connection backflow preventer – shall consist of two
independent check valves with an independent
atmospheric vent between and a means of field testing and
draining
• Double check valve backflow prevention assembly – shall
consist of two independently acting internally loaded check
valve
• Reduced pressure principle backflow prevention assembly
– shall consist of two independently acting internally
loaded check valves, a differential pressure relief valves,
four properly located test cocks, and two isolation valves
• Pressure vacuum breaker backflow prevention assembly –
shall consist of one check valve force loaded closed and an
air inlet vent valve force loaded open to atmosphere,
positioned downstream of the check valve, and located
between and including two tightly closing shutoff valves at
test cocks
PROTECTION FROM LAWN SPRINKLERS
AND IRRIGATION SYSTEMS

Potable water piping system that supplies to irrigation

systems having no pumps or connections for pumping
equipment, and no chemical injection or provisions for
chemical injection, shall be protected from backflow
Non-potable water piping. In cases where it is impractical to
correct individual cross connections on the domestic
waterline, the line supplying supplying such outlets shall be
considered a non-potable water line
WATER TREATMENT UNITS

Reverse osmosis drinking water treatment units shall meet

the requirements of the appropriate international standards.
All waste or discharge from reverse osmosis or other types
of water treatment units shall enter drainage system through
an air gap
Any deck mounted or equipment mounted vacuum breakers
shall be installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s
instructions
PROTECTION FROM FIRE SYSTEMS

Automatic fire sprinklers systems shall not require any

backflow protection requirement at the water service
connection other than required by standards for those
systems contained in the latest publication of the national
fire protection association NFPA 13
Any residential sprinkler systems that are installed using the
potable water piping system, shall be installed in accordance
with the standards of this code
MEDICAL EQUIPMENT WATER SUPPLY
CONNECTION

All hose connections in medical and laboratory facilities shall

not be less than 6ft above the floor.Vacuum breakers for
washer hose bedpans shall be located not less than 5ft above
the floor
All water heaters connected to water piping system shall
provided with flexible metallic water heater connectors or
reinforced flexible water heater connectors
MATERIALS

Materials for all potable water carrying pipe, tube, and fittings for the
purpose of supplying drinking water shall meet the requirements of
NSF 61. similar materials shall be used in a water supply piping
system, except valves and similar devices.
Exceptions:
1. Use of CPVC is not permitted for medical applications
2. Use of PEX piping is not permitted for medical applications
3. Use of PEXALPEX piping is not permitted for medical applications
4. Use of PEX piping is not adopted for medical and food
applications
The use of CPVC for hot and cold water distribution systems within the
interior of hotel and residential buildings is allowed provided all of the
following conditions are satisfied:
1. Permit conditions – any building permit issued shall be conditioned
for compliance with the mitigation measures set forth in this section
2. Approved materials – only CPVC plumbing material listed as an
approved material and installed
3. Installation and use – any installation and use of CPVC plumbing
material pursuant to this section shall comply with all applicable
requirements.
4. Worker safety – any contractor applying for a building permit that
includes the use of CPVC plumbing materials must:
- aware of the health and safety hazards
- the worker safety training elements of their injury and illness
prevention plan meet the department of industrial relation’s guidelines
5. Finding compliance – the building official shall not give final
permit approval of any CPVC plumbing materials installed
pursuant to section 1404.1.1, unless he/she finds that the
material has been installed in compliance with the
requirements of this code
PEX (cross linked polyethylene) tubing shall be marked with
the appropriate United States or European standard
designations indicating that the tubing has been approved

PEXALPEX (cross linked polyethylene aluminum cross linked

polyethylene) and PEALPE (polyethylene aluminum
polyethylene) composite pipes shall be marked with the
appropriate United States or European standard designations
indicating that the tubing has been approved
TYPES OF JOINTS

1. Flared joints – soft copper water tubing shall be

connected with flared joints fittings meeting approved
standards
2. Mechanical joints – mechanical joints for cast-iron water
pipe shall confirm to internationally recognized standards
Inadequate water pressure. When the residual water
pressure of at least 15pounds per square inch cannot be
provided by the main water supply and after allowing for
friction and other pressure losses
Excessive water pressure. When the static water pressure
exceeds 80 pounds per square inch an approved type
pressure regulator preceded by an adequate strainer shall be
installed and the static pressure produced to 80 pounds per
square inch or less
DISINFECTION OF POTABLE WATER
SYSTEM

1. The pipe shall be flushed with clean, potable water until

only potable water appears at the points of outlet
2. The system or parts thereof shall be filled with a water
chlorine solution containing at least 50 parts per million
of chlorine
3. Following the allowed standing time, the system shall be
flushed with clean, potable water until the chlorine
residual in the water coming from the system does not
exceed the chlorine residual in the flushing water
