Gas

•Gas is an empty space and its

particle are far apart from each
other
•Intermolecular force- attractive
force
Gas particles are in constant,
chaotic motion
Moving particles may be atoms
or molecules
Molecule- group of two or more
atoms held together by a
chemical bond
Properties of Gases
Properties of Gases
1.Have no definite shape
and volume
2.Flow and diffuse easily
3.Are compressible
4.Exert pressure
1. Have no definite
shape and volume
They fill their container
regardless of its shape
and volume.
2. Flow and diffuse easily
Flow easily past one another and mix evenly
Diffusion- movement of one particle to
another
Diffuse from an area of high concentration to
an area of low concentration
Ex: You can smell the food being cooked in
the kitchen (HC) from where you are in the
house (LC)
3. Are compressible
Between the particles are empty
spaces
You can therefore, compress or
reduce the distance between
particles by applying pressure.
4. Exert pressure
Pressure- defined as force exerted per
unit area
Gas pressure- the result of simultaneous
collisions of gas molecules with one
another
Ex: Air exerts pressure on Earth because
gravity pulls air molecules toward Earth
Liquids
Have weak attractive forces
These forces allow particles to spin
in a fixed position while moving
from one place to another.
it keeps the particles closer to
each other
Properties of Liquids
1.Have definite volume
but no definite shape
2.Flow and diffuse slowly
3.Are nearly compressible
1. Have definite volume
but no definite shape
Forces of attraction between the
particles of a liquid hold them
together and allow them to
occupy a fixed space.
2. Flow and diffuse slowly
Like gas, liquid is referred to as fluid
Fluid- substance that has the ability to flow
They flow and diffuse slowly because of weak
intermolecular force
Viscocity- the resistance of a liquid to flow. It
does not flow easily.
Ex: Syrup, molasses and oil are more viscous
than water; therefore they move slowly
3. Are nearly compressible
Liquidparticles are closer
together than gas particles
Enormous amount of pressure is
needed to reduce a liquid’s
volume
