Music Of Palawan

Music is very significant for the


tribal groups of Palawan such as
Tagbanuas,Bataks,cuyunons,and
aetas . these tribes use musical
instuments during gatherings,such
as funerals,festivals,and
rituals.they also use music as a
means of curing sicknesses and
driving away evil spirits.
A. Vocal Music
the music of Palawan
can be classified into two
types : the songs and the
chants.the following are
some examples of songs and
chants from Palawan.
Tultul-a Palawan epic
chant that is performed by
a person believed to be
possessed by the taw
tultultulan.it is only sung
during nighttime and never
chanted for entertainment.
Ulit-a song expressing the
difficulties encountered by
shaman during his/her
journey to the other
dimensions of the world.
Sandaw-a version of
lullaby from Palawan that
has a pentatonic or
diatonic scale.

Composo-a Palawan ballad


that tells about sorrows
and despair.
Kulial-a love song from
Palawan that is used in
expressing affection for
someone.

Erekay-a Palawan
planting song.
Gozos-a song performed
for a saint that is
commonly sung towards the
end of novena.

Pa hesus-a Palawan song


intended for dead.
B . Instrument

Aruding-is the palawan’s


version of a harp.it is made
of bamboo.
Babarak-is a ring flute
that is considered to be the
smallest of it’s kind.
Basal-is a metal gong that
is platelike and has turned-
down rim.
Pagang-is a zither.
Kudyapi-is a long boat-lute
composed of two strings.it
is the only stringed
instrument among the
maguindanaoans.(kudyapi
or kusyapi)
Suling-is another kind of
ring flute from palawan.
