THEORIZING Religion is best
GLOBALIZATION explained as a
& THE cultural component
CULTURAL since religion is
COMPONENTS undeniably an
expression of the
self.
Study and analysis of globalization
and religion precedes upon the premise
that "of all things the measure is man, of
the things that are, that they are, and of
the things that are not, that they are not"
(Homo Mensura) or simply as "Man is the
Measure of All Things"
This anthropocentric approach
recognizes that everything we see
around us, except those who we
consider as the Supreme Being's
creations and will-expressions, are all
product of man's dynamic nature and
creative imagination propelled by his
imagination towards success and self-
fulfillment.
Culture therefore plays a vital role by means of
validation and clarification of that human
expression we call religion.

Contemporary world - study of Politics: state

remains as the locus of globalization and is a key
factor in the study and understanding of this
phenomenon.
STATE IS LIKE A PERSON

A)One essential element of state is sovereignty

while that of a man is his soul
B)state possesses the quality of permanence,
man's intrinsic identity remains the same
C) State guided by principles and policies in
order to achieve goals and objectives, man
also needs the same parameters to negotiate
its way to success
Principle - basic truth or a general law or
doctrine that is used as a basis of reasoning or
a guide to action or behavior.

Policy - course or general plan of action adopted by

the government or party or a person. Also used to
refer to a line of conduct with respect to foreign or
international affairs.
Vertical Future - aspect of well-being geared
towards the realization of its primary goals of
development and progress

Horizontal Future - state's extra curricular activities

that may influence the direction it vertically
traverses
Our adherence to principles and
policies can be anchored to our
preambolic declaration of imploring the
aid of Almighty God which is very
reflective of our religious affiliations and
expressions.
Principle is more on the formulation
process, anchored on one's system of
beliefs while policy is its execution.

The principle therefore is the basis of

policy formulation that needs to be
executed.
Globalism, at its core, seeks to describe and
explain nothing more than a world which is
characterized by networks of connections that
span multi-continental distances.

Globalization refers to the increase or decline in the

degree of globalism. It focuses on the forces, the
dynamism or speed of these changes.

1. HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE
o Jesus Christ founded
CHRISTIANITY Christianity

o By the multitudes of
Christian teachings
around the world,
the catechism
practice around the
globe was being
replicated by
emperors, kings and
missionaries
o St. Paul of Tarsus was among the greatest
contributors and has greatly influenced for the
CHRISTIANITY
development and growth of Catholic Church.

o In the Philippines, it was the missionaries who

directly facilitated the introduction and spread
of faith.

o The Spanish colonization marked the entry of

colonization to our motherland.

o Spanish explorers' goals in their conquest

among others are god, glory and gold.
ISLAM
o Islam is an islamic
word which means
"listen"

o In the context of
religion, the term
refers to "voluntary
submission to Allah"
o Muslims believed that the finality and
CHRISTIANITY of their faith's evaluation
completeness
was made through the Prophet
Muhammad

o Islamic doctrines assert that Muhammad is

God's last messenger and prophet that is
tasked to preach the monotheistic
teachings taught previously by Jesus and
other prophets of God

o Islam was propagated through the sword

o Nonetheless, some historians argue that
CHRISTIANITY
the spread of Islam was a result of man's
natural tendency of making free choices
and that occupants of conquered
territories were never forced nor induced
to convert to the faith.

o When Prophet Muhammad died, Islam

expanded in the truest sense in the early
630 A.D
o Islam's spread was not only through the
usual military
CHRISTIANITY conquest but also through
pilgrimage and missionaries, even trade
and commerce

o In the Philippines, there are approximately

11 million Muslim Filipinos.

o Historians attributed the arrival of Islam to

the islands to Tuan Masha'ika who is an
Arab missionary and religious leader who
stepped on the Jolo Island (currently
called as Sulu island)
BUDDHISM
Siddharta Gautama

o founder and referred

to as the iconic
Buddha, born in
Lumbini in the fifth
century BCE.
CHRISTIANITY
o The goal of Buddhism is a state of lasting,
unconditional happiness known as
enlightenment.

o "Karma: What goes around, comes around“

o Buddhists embrace the concepts of karma

(the law of cause and effect) and
reincarnation (the continuous cycle of
rebirth)
2. RELIGIOUS RECIPROCATION
o Religious reciprocity being the territorial
emigration of faiths is reflective of the very
essence and purpose of religion itself which is
self-actualization, realization and salvation
among others.

o Religious reciprocity represents humility and

responsibility in the committed effort of
propagating religious teachings across and
beyond our very shores through our very own
local religion going global.
 Felix Manalo's Iglesia ni Kristo
 Elisio Soriano's Dating Daan

o Non-reciprocity could be construed as

arrogance, indolence, or display of passive
disposition
3. SECULARIZATION
Pre- Secularism Period
Secularism vs. Secularization

o refers to the condition o refers to the process

manifested in the of change as in
assertion of the right education, art,
to be free from morality, and
religious teachings or society.
neutrality on matter
of belief from
government
imposition
o Theorizing religion therefore, entails the
presentation of two problematics:

o First, pertains to the study of explicit

category, structure, or framework of
religious proliterations
o Second, pertains to the study of the
impact of the process of globalization
upon religion.
