MATTER
• Every thing around us is called matter. Matter is anything
which occupies space and has mass. Some examples of
matter are wood , water and air.
Matter is found in three states.
• Solid
• Liquid
• Gas
SOLIDS , LIQUIDS & GASES
• Solid: The particles in a solid are: close together & arranged in a regular
way. They
can vibrate in a fixed position. Solids have a definite shape and cannot be
compressed.

• Liquid: The molecules in a liquid are loosely packed and constantly

moving. Liquid has no fixed shape , it takes the shape of its container.

• Gas: The particles in a gas are far apart and move in all directions. They
flow and completely fill their container. They can be compressed
(squashed)
CLASSIFICATION OF MATTER
Matter can be broken down into two categories:
• Pure Substances
• Mixtures.
• Pure substances are further broken down into elements and
compounds.
• Mixtures are physically combined structures that can be
separated into their original components.
ELEMENT
• A chemical substance that is made up of a particular kind of
atom and cannot be broken down or transformed by a
chemical reaction.
COMPOUND
• A compound is a substance formed when two or more
chemical elements are chemically bonded together.
MIXTURES
HOMOGENEOUS MIXTURES
• A homogeneous mixture is one that's mixed or blended
together so well that all of the ingredients will not separate
out, even over time. ( salt water , air, blood)
HETEROGENEOUS MIXTURES
•  A heterogeneous mixture is a substance that can be easily
separated into its parts, and those parts retain their original
properties.
• Many of the foods we eat are heterogeneous mixtures, like Mixed
nuts , Fruit salad ,Pizza, Chocolate chip cookies, Chicken noodle
soup, Milk & Fizzy Drinks.
• There are many heterogeneous mixtures that are not foods like
sand & water, oil & water and smog.
