What Is Therapeutic Communication ?

Is an interpersonal interaction between the


nurse and client during wich the nurse
focuses on the specific needs of the client
to promote an effective exchange of
information between the nurse and client

The goals of therapeutic
Communication
Self realization, self acceptance, and an increased
genuine self respect
A clear of personal identity and an improved level
of personal integration
An ability to form an intimate, interdependent,
interpersonal relationship with a capacity to give
and receive love
Improve functioning and increased ability to
satisfy needs and achieve a realistic personal
goals
Phases of the relationship
Prainteraction phase
 Begins before the nurse’s first contact with
the patient
 Gathering data about the patient
 Self exploration : Fear, anxious, ect
 Planning for the first interaction with the
client
Orientation Phase

 Nurse and client first meet


 Establish a climate of trust, understanding, acceptance,
and open communication
 Formulate contract with the client
 Element of a nurse-client contract :
 Names of individual
 Roles of nurse and client
 Responsibilities of nurse and client
 Expectations of nurse and client
 Purpose of the relationship
 Meeting location and time
 Condition for termination
 Confidentiality
 Exploring feelings
 To explore the client’s perceptions, thougts,
feelings and action
 To identify pertinent client problem
 To define mutual, specific goals with the client
Working phase
 The nurse and the client explore stressor
and promote the development of insight in
the client by linking perceptions, thoughts,
feelings and actions
 Actual behavor change is the focus in this
phase
Termination phase
 Is most difficult and most important phases
of the therapeutic nurse-client relationship
 Formulate contract for next meeting
Transactional Analysis Model
Is the study of the communication or
transactions that take place between people
The way to know “Who am I”
Each person’s personality is made up of three
distinct components called Ego states : Parent
ego state, adult ego state, child ego state
(Berne cit Stuart & Laraia, 2001)
An ego state is a consistent pattern of feeling,
experiencing and behaving
