 FIFTH CENTENARY OF HEIDELBERG UNIVERSITY
 IN LEIPZIG AND DRESDEN
On his way to Paris he stopped at the Barcelona to visit a friend name Maximo
Viola, stayed for a week and befriended Senor Eusebio Corominas

Maximo Viola – a medical student and a member of a rich


family of San Miguel, Bulacan .
Senor Eusebio Corominas– editor of the newspaper La
Publicidad and made a crayon sketch of Don Miguel
Morayta.
Miguel Morayta– owner of La Publicidad and a statesman.
IN NOVEMBER 1885

- Rizal lived in Paris , sojourned for 4months


- Work as an assistant of Dr. de Weckert (a
leading French ophtalomogist, from
November 1885 – February 1886).
- Rizal rapidly improved his knowledge of
opthalmology
Outside of Rizals working hours at Dr. Weckerts clinic…………………………..

- The Family of the Pardo de Taveras (Trinidad, Feli and Paz) was Rizals
friends during the hours
- Rizal discussed about the great master of the brush and problems on art
to improved his own painting technique.
- Juan Luna’s famous painting are “The Blood Compact and The Death of
Cleopatra”
RIZAL AS MUSICIAN

- Rizal had no natural aptitude for music; he could not sing well
- Played the piano in one month
- He was a fluist in various impromptu renionsof Filipino in Paris. Composing the
of Alin Mang Lahi (ap patriotic song which asserts any race aspires for freedom,
and a sad danza) and La Deportacion, which he composed in Dapitan during his
exile.
IN HISTORIC HEIDELBERG
After acquiring enough experience as an ophthalmologist , He left gay Paris on February 1, 1886 for Germany . Visited
Strasbourg (capital of Alsace Lorraine and other German border towns)…….

- He arrived in Heidelberg on February 3, 1886. Lived in a boarding house with some German
law students for a short time. Rizal was a good chess player too, became popular among the German
students.
- Worked at the University Eye Hospital under the direction of a distinguished German ophthalmology Dr.
Otto Becker, Rizal attended the lectures of Dr. Becker and Prof. Wilhelm Kuehne at the University.
- Rizal was fascinated by the blooming flowers along the cool banks of the neckar river. His favorite flower is
the light blue “forget-me-not”. It reminds Hs garden at the Calamba.
- Because of His homesickness, he wrote afine poem “A Las Flores de Heidelberg” (To the flower of
Heidelberg on April 22, 1886.
WITH PASTOR ULLMER AT WILHELMSFELD
-He spent 3 months summer vacation at Wilhelmfeld (a mountainous village
near Heidelberg). Protestant pastor , Dr. Karl Ullmer becames Rizals
good friend and admirer.
- Sojourned back to Heidelberg on June 25, 1886 carrying bunch of
memories to the Ullmers friendship and hospitality.
- May 29, 1887, Rizal wrote from Munich and Friedrich, son of Pastor as
sign of gratitude.
FIRST LETTER TO BLUMENTRITT
On July 31, 1886
-He wrote the his first letter in German (which he had improved while
in the Ulmers) to Professor Blumentritt
- With the letter, Rizal sent the book which he mentioned
Aritmetica(Arithmetic) and was published in tagalog and spanish.
- It marked as the beginning of their friendship that lasted their
lives, the Austrian Prof. became the best friend of Rizal
FIFTH CENTENARY OF HEIDELBERG UNIVERSITY
-The celebration was held on August 6, 1886. Rizal was sad because
he will departure in this place for only days 3 left.
- Rizal described the celebration on His diaries during the event.
IN LEIPZIG AND DRESDEN
- He arrived at Leipzig on August 14, 1886. Attended
some lectures at the University of Leipzig on History
and Psychology, befriended Prof. Friedrich Ratzal (a
famous German Historian) and Dr. Hans Meyer,
(German anthropologist).
- Stayed here for 2months and worked as proof- reader
in a publoishers firm for extra income.
- Rizal left the city on October 29 for Dresden.

RIZAL WELCOMED IN BERLINS SCIENTIFIC CIRCLES
-He met a lot of great scientist here for the first time. Like
Dr. Feodor Jagor, Dr. Rudolf Virchow, Dr. Hans Virchow, Dr.
W. Joest and worked in the clinic of Dr. Karl Ernest
Schweigger.
- Became a member of anthropological, ethnographical and
geographical society at Berlin.
RIZALS LIFE IN BERLIN………
He went here for 5 reasons:
• to gain further knowledge of ophthamology
• To further His studies of sciences and languages
• To observe the economic had polotical condiotions of the German nation
• To associate with famous German scientist and scholars
• To publish the novel, Noli Me Tangere.

- Practice speaking German, French, and Italian. Took private lessons to Madame
Lucie Ceredole in order to master idiomatic intricaries of French language.
RIZAL ON GERMAN WOMEN
- One of His important letters addressed to His sister Trinidad,
dated March 11, 1886. Expressing His high regard and
admiration for German womanhood.
“Now that you are still young should strive to read, read and learn.
You must not allow yourself to be conquered by indolence because it
cost so little to cast it off.” – Jose Rizal
GERMAN CUSTOM
- Rizal observed the traditions during the Christmas custom of the
Germans.
“ The Germans adorned with lanterns, papers, lights, dolls, candies,
fruits etc. and shown at night to children from a Pine tree.”

-Another German custom observed by Rizal is the self - introductions


to strangers in social gathering. Everyone should be friendly in
introducing to anyone in an event.
RIZAL’S DARKEST WINTER

Rizal lived in poverty. NO MONEY. Couldn’t pay the


LANDLORD. Had to scrimp and EATING ONLY 1 MEAL a
DAY.
HIS HEALTH broke down due to LACK of proper
nourishment.
Began to cough and FEARED to be sick with
TUBERCOLOSIS. His cried out in
despair..
