WHAT IS LEADING?

Leading is that management function which


“involves influencing others to engage in the
work behaviors necessary to reach organizational
goals”.
Leading refers to the function while, Leadership
refers to the process.
LEADERS AND LEADERSHIP

LEADER - someone who can influence others and who


has managerial authority.

LEADERSHIP – what leaders do; the process of


influencing the group to achieve
goals.
HOW LEADERS INFLUENCES OTHERS?

Manager are expected to maintain effective


workforces. To be able to do so, they are required to
perform leadership roles. Leader are said to be able to
influence others because of the power they possess.
A leader is a person who believes in a certain goal and
who has a certain vision. Good leaders who influence
others easily are the ones who strongly believe in this
vision. This means that unless you strongly believe in
this vision or this goal you will never be able to
influence others.
WHO IS A LEADER?

-One that leads or guides.


-One who is in charge or in command of
others.
-One who heads a political party or
organization.
-One who has influence or power, especially
of a political nature.
TWO TYPES OF LEADER

Formal Leader
- Some leaders hold a position of authority and may use
the power that comes from their position, as well as their
personal power, to influence others.
Informal Leader
- without a formal position of authority within the
organization but demonstrate leadership by influencing
others through personal forms of power.
ROLE OF A LEADER
A leader’s role is always to ensure his/her team achieves the task
in hand, but an effective leader will also ensure they meet more
subtle requirement like
-Strong Focus
- Integrity
-Good engagement with others
-Looking at the bigger picture
-Resourcefulness
-Organizational Clout
-Effective communication

Intelligence – the ability to learn or understand things or to


deal with new or difficult situations.
- demonstrate a high level of self- awareness,
motivation, empathy, and social skills.
BIG FIVE PERSONALITY TRAITS
Self-esteem – the degree to which people are at peace with
themselves and have an overall positive
assessment of their self-worth and
capabilities seems to be relevant to whether
they will be viewed as a leader.

Integrity - the quality of being honest and fair.

CONTEMPORARY APPROACH TO LEADERSHIP

1.) Transformational Leadership Approach


-highlights the importance of leader charisma,
inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, and
individualized consideration as methods of influence.
2.) Transactional Leadership Approach
-in which the leader focuses on getting employees to
achieve organizational goals.
3.) Leader-Member Exchange (LMX) Approach
-the unique, trust-based relationships leaders
develop with employees is the key to leadership
effectiveness.
4.) Servant Leadership Approach
-The leader’s role as serving the needs of others .
5.) Authentic Leadership Approach
-Leaders have to be a lot of things to a lot of
people.

Leadership as Position
Leadership as Position
-Position-based leadership assumes it is where people operate that makes
them leaders.
Leadership as Person
-This definition of leadership emphasizes the importance of
the person’s character.
Leadership as Result
-With this definition of leadership we look at the results of leadership.
Leadership as Process
-The process-based definition of leadership considers the relationship
between leader and practice. It is what leaders do that matters.
FOUR LEADERSHIP STYLES

Directive leaders - provide specific directions to their


employees.
Supportive leaders - provide emotional support to
employees.
Participative leaders - make sure that employees are
involved in making important decisions.
Achievement-oriented leaders -set goals for employees
and encourage them to reach their
goals.
