CONSUMPTION AND CONSUMERISM

MOHAMMED ADEEL
INTRODUCTION
Why do people buy ?

First, we satisfy our “lower level” needs, like

basic nourishment and safety, the base layers
of the pyramid. Only then can we be
concerned with “higher level” needs, like love
and belonging, and esteem, the
steppingstones to self-actualization, the
reaching of one’s full potential and the
pinnacle of the pyramid.
CONSUMPTION VS CONSUMERISM

 Consumption is the process of consuming goods.

 You buy a loaf of bread to consume it (to eat it).

 Consumerism is when you're buying things that you don't

necessarily need for the sake of buying them.
 Consumption is a process that's considered normal.

 It's a technical term for describing the process of using up a

resource.
CONSUMPTION VS CONSUMERISM
 You buy something and you use it.

 Consumerism, on the other hand, is a cultural phenomenon and has a

rather negative connotation as though it were unhealthy practice
 If consumption is the act, Consumerism is the social system which exists
when that act becomes defining of a society.
 And it’s Consumerism that causes the problems.

 Consumerism takes the act of consumption and turns it into the

defining act of our role as social beings.
CONSUMPTION VS CONSUMERISM

 Consumerism is a social and economic order that is based on the

systematic creation and fostering of a desire to purchase goods
and services in ever greater amounts.
 The term "consumerism" was first used in 1915 to refer to
"advocacy of the rights and interests of consumers" but in this
article the term "consumerism" refers to the sense first used in
1960, "emphasis on or preoccupation with the acquisition of
consumer goods“
