WHAT IS SENTENCE?

Sentence is a set of words that is complete in itself, typically


containing a subject and predicate, conveying a statement,
question, exclamation, or command, and consisting of a main
clause and sometimes one or more subordinate clauses.

Example:
• They are explaining something.
• When he was at the book fair, the man bought novel.

Simple Sentences
• A simple sentence is one independent clause that has a
subject and a verb.
• Must express a complete thought.

Example Of Simple Sentence :


• Joe went to the store.
• The pizza smells delicious.
• There is a fly in the car with us.
Simple sentence with compound elements:

a) Compound Subject
Example: Tom and Jerry, Jessie and I,You and I

b) Compound Verb
Example: Jessie and I go shopping and have lunch together

c) Compound Adverb
Example: Jessie and I goes shopping regularly at PIM once a month
• A Compound sentence is a sentence contain two or more independent
clauses joined together in one of the three ways:

1. With a coma (,) and a coordinating conjunction FANBOYS (for / and / nor /
but / or / yet / so) to show the relationship between the clauses.

Example: I am very smart, yet I do not enjoy school.


I have never visited Japan, nor have I visited Korea
2. With a semicolon (;) when the ideas expressed are closely related.

Example: They were glad to leave the country; their lives were in danger.

3. With a semicolon (;) and a conjunctive adverb.


•A conjunctive adverb brings together two complete thoughts.
• The first clause is followed by a semi-colon.
Example:
I wanted to see a scary movie; however, my friend
wanted to see a comedy.

Complex sentence
• A complex sentence has only one independent clause and at least one
dependent clause
• Complex sentences let us share lots of information with just one sentence
• Example :
When the cat went to the kitchen, he ate fish.
• When the cat went to the kitchen, he ate fish.

Dependent “Marker” Words/Subordinating Conjunctions

• Goes at the beginning of an independent clause.


• It turns an independent clause into a dependant clause by adding
details like time or context.
• Common dependent marker words include: after, although, as,
because, before, even if, even though, if, since, though, unless, until,
whatever, when, whenever, whether, and while

Example:
• Unless you have the money, you shouldn’t buy them.

• Complex sentences with one dependent clause


Ex: She returned the computer after she noticed it was damaged.

Compound complex sentence

Compound sentence :
A Compound sentence is a sentence contain two or more independent
clauses joined together in one of the three ways:
1. With a coma (,) and a coordinating conjunction
2. With a semicolon (;)
3. With a semicolon (;) and a conjunctive adverb.
Complex Sentence :
A complex sentence has only one independent clause and at least one
dependent clause. Parts of complex sentence
 Independent clause.
 Dependent (subordinate) clause.
 Dependent “marker” words/subordinating conjunctions.

COMPOUND-COMPLEX SENTENCE:
• Made up of more than one independent clauses joined by a
conjunction
• Has at least one dependent clauses
