ACCELERATION

Charlize Marie D. Dula-ogon

Jemma G. Gonzales
In everyday terms, acceleration
refers to objects which are moving
so fast.
In physics, an object that moves
fast may not be accelerating. Also,
an object that moves slowly may be
accelerating.
Acceleration is the rate at which
an object’s velocity changes.
Acceleration indicates how fast
an object changes its velocity.
Velocity is the rate at which an
object changes position.
Acceleration is just like velocity, it
is a vector quantity, which
means it has both magnitude
and direction.
Magnitude refers to the amount
or size of a quantity.
An object accelerates when its
velocity changes in magnitude,
direction, or both magnitude and
direction.
SPEEDING UP
01
SLOWING OWN
When you think of acceleration,
you probably think of something
speeding up. However, an object
that is slowing down also an
acceleration.
If the acceleration is
in the same direction
as the velocity, the
speed increases and
the acceleration is
positive.
If the velocity and
acceleration are in the
same direction (both have
the same sign - both
positive or both negative)
the object is speeding up.
If the speed decreases,
the acceleration is in
the opposite direction
from the velocity, and
the acceleration is
negative.
If the velocity and
acceleration are in opposite
directions (they have
opposite signs), the object
is slowing down.
CHANGING
DIRECTION
02
A change in velocity can be
either a change in how fast
something is moving or a
change in the direction of
movement.
Any time a moving object changes
direction, its velocity changes and it
is accelerating.
The speed of the
horses in this carousel
is constant, but the
horses are accelerating
because their direction
is changing constantly.

direction of movement.
CALCULATING
ACCELERATION 03
To calculate the acceleration of
an object, the change in
velocity is divided by the
length of time interval over
which the change occurred.
To calculate the change in
velocity, subtract the initial
velocity – the velocity at the
beginning of the time interval –
from the final velocity – the
velocity at the end of the time
interval.
The change in initial velocity is:
vf - vi

04 PROBLEM
SOLVING
1. A roller coaster starts down a hill
at 10 m/s. Three seconds later, its
speed is 32 m/s. What is the roller
coaster’s acceleration?
Given:
vi = 10 m/s a = (vf - vi) ÷ t
t =3s a = (32m/s - 10m/s) ÷ (3s)
vf = 32 m/s a = 22 m/s ÷ 3 s
a =? a = 7.3 m/s2
2. A skater goes from a standstill to
a speed of 6.7 m/s in 12
seconds. What is the acceleration
of the skater?
Given:
vi = 0 m/s a = (vf - vi) ÷ t
t = 12 s a = (6.7m/s - 0m/s) ÷ (12s)
vf = 6.7 m/s a = 6.7 m/s ÷ 12 s
a =? a = .56 m/s2

vf - vi

a t
9.
Given: a = (vf - vi) ÷ t
vi = 9 m/s a = (0m/s - 9m/s) ÷ (5s)
t =5s a = -9 m/s ÷ 5 s
vf = 0 m/s a = -1.8 m/s 2

a =?
10.
Given:
t=? t = (vf - vi) ÷ a
vi = 30 m/s t = (0m/s-30m/s)÷(-3m/s2)
vf = 0 m/s t = -30 m/s ÷ -3m/s2
a = -3 m/s2 t = 10 s
