Tujuan Kuliah
Mahasiswa mampu:
 menjelaskan apa yang dimaksud dengan Sistem, Informasi dan Sistem Informasi
 memahami pentingnya mempelajari Sistem Informasi

Definisi Sistem
Sistem

mencapai suatu tujuan tertentu.

Karakteristik Sistem
Melakukan transformasi (proses) dari masukan menjadi keluaran
Terdiri dari berbagai disiplin pengetahuan
Merupakan kesatuan yang utuh
Dapat saling dibedakan komponennya
Sinergi
Mempunyai hirarki (lingkungan, sistem, subsistem)
Harus mempunyai aturan
Harus berorientasi kepada tujuan

Now: what is information system? There is additional
word: information.

Data And Information
 Raw data is a collection of values (maybe numbers and/or text)
that are captured, recorded, stored and classified, but not
organized to convey an specific meaning, or
 Facts or figures in raw form
 Data can have little meaning until it is processed
 (the aim of processing is to make the data into useful
information)
 E.g. A B A C E D A A B C D A B A
 Question:
 What could the data above represent?

WSA | PDB-SI | 2016

Data And Information – Cont..
 Information
 Collection of data organized to convey meaning or
 raw facts processed to make them more usable and/or understandable
by humans
 Data presented in a form that is useful in a decision making activity
 Example : BP Mid Test Grade of IT Del 1st year Students in 2010

What is an Information System ?
An Information System (IS) can be any organized combination of
people, hardware, software, communication networks, data resources,
and policies and procedures that stores, retrieves, transforms, and
disseminates information in an organization.

Ex : People rely on modern IS to communicate with one another using

a variety of physical devices (hardware), information processing
instruction and procedures (software), communication channels
(network) , and data stores (data resources).

What is an Information System ? -2
IS is a man made system that facilitates an organization’s
operational functions and support management decision
making by providing information that managers can use to
plan and control the activities of the firm.

What is an Information System ? -3
 Although today’s IS are typically thought of as having
something to do with computers, we have been using IS since
the dawn of civilization. Even today we make regular use of IS
that have nothing to do with a computer.
 Smoke signal for communication
 Card catalogs in a library
 Your book bag, day planner, notebooks, file folders
 Etc…please name others..

What is an Information System ? -4
 Our focus will be in computer-based information system
(CBIS)
 CBIS can be defined as a computerized system that process
and maintain organizational data and information to support
the organizational processes and decision making.
 Examples: ATMs, airline reservation systems, course
reservation systems

What is an Information System ?
Conclusion
 Broad definition of information system is given as:
 Information system is a system comprised of people,
machines, methods, activities to collect, process, transmit, and
disseminate data that represent user information.
 Our focus will be in computer-based information system.
 Computer based-information system can be defined as: a
computerized system that process and maintain organizational
data and information to support the organizational processes
and decision making.

Why I need to study IS ?
IS have become as integrated to our daily business activities such as
accounting, finance, operation management, marketing, human
resource management, or any other major business function .
IS and IT are vital components of successful business and organizations.
IT including Internet-based IS, are playing vital and expanding roles in
business.
IT can help all kinds of business improve the efficiency and
effectiveness of their business process, managerial decision making,
and workgroup collaboration, which strengthens their competitive
positions in rapidly changing marketplaces.

Why I need to study IS ?- 2
The purpose of information system is to process and maintain the data and
information system as one of the results of business process (activities).
If the organization is small and simple, you do not need information system. It
will just cost you. You can use manual paper work instead of investing in
information system.
However, if the system is getting larger in terms of actors and processes, it will
be too complex to process data which relied on manual paper work.
In the presence of system complexities, information system will streamline the
business processes. It supports the processes to be more efficient.

Why Should I Study Information
Systems -3
• The Informed User—You!
• IT Offers Career Opportunities
• Managing Information Resources

WSA | PDB-SI | 2016

The Informed User – You!
1. You benefit more when you understand what is “behind” IT
applications
2. You can provide valuable input
3. You can recommend and help select IT Applications
4. You will be aware of new technology
5. You understand how IT improves performance
6. Understanding IT is very beneficial to entrepreneurs.

WSA | PDB-SI | 2016

IT Offers Career Opportunities
• IT is vital to modern business providing many lucrative career
opportunities
Programmers, business analysts, systems analysts, and designers
Chief Information Officer (CIO) – executive in charge of the IS
function
Career opportunities will remain strong in the future

WSA | PDB-SI | 2016

Managing Information Resources
• Managing Information Resources is difficult and complex
because:
IS has an enormous strategic value to organizations
IS’s are very expensive to acquire, operate, and maintain
Evolution of the MIS function within the organization
