Important Rules

1. No TALKING during the presentation. Only talk when asked by us.

2. Questions WILL be asked to EVERYONE. Pay attention.

3. No making FUN. It took a lot of time so mistakes can happen.

NOTE: If any rules are broken than serious consequences will take
place.
A Source and Detector

• As we have already leaned in Chapter 5

that a sound need a source and a
detector. Following that same concept
light too need a source and a detector.
Examples of these are:
Light Sensors (Detector)
Eyes (Detector)
Lamp (Source)
Sun (Source)
Light Journey

• There are 4 ways (mentioned in

our book) on how light travels.
Here they are:
1. Emitted
2. Transmitted
3. Reflected
4. Absorbed

• We will be discussing there

points in the next slides.
1. Emitted

• Emit is when an object gives out

light. It is very useful because the
light bulbs we use in rooms today
emit light. We can simply say that
emission is an object giving out
light. Lasers are 1 example of
objects that give out light. Also
the laser is a abbreviation it
stands of Light Amplification by
Simulated Emissions of Radiation.
2. Transmitted

• Passing through an object is what we

refer to as transmit. Light transmitting
is very useful as if you want to look at
things through transparent objects
such as a glass or window.
3. Reflected

• The third type of light’s journey

is reflection. Have you even
looked in a pond, if you have you
will see your face in it. This is
because light is reflected of your
face and absorbed into the
water. You will get to know more
about absorption in the next
slide.
Transparent

• Transparent is a type of material

that allows light to pass through it.
Glass is transparent. It has many
uses such as looking through
windows, the plastic in a bottle and
many others.
Translucent

• Translucent objects are objects

that are see through a little bit.
You can see the main things, but
the detail cannot be seen in
translucent materials. These are
useful in their own way, such as
when you turn on a lamp the
translucent lamp shade lets light
transmit through it to spread
around a room.
Opaque

• Opaque materials are the

ones that won’t allow any
light to go through them. As
light doesn’t bend around
corners, it stops as it touches
an opaque object. It is useful
in knowing that trees provide
a shade that is good for us in
a hot day.
Light Intensity and Lux

• Light intensity is the intensity of

light energy hitting a certain area
per second. This intensity is
measured using lux (unit) and
light meter. The light spreads out
as it move away from its source.
Here are some measures of lux.
20,000 lux at midday. 80 lux in a
bright room. 1 lux in a full moon.
Luminous Objects

• Luminous objects are objects that

give out light. They emit light. The
examples of these kind of objects is:
• Sun
• Lamp
• Light Bulb
• Lantern
Non-Luminous Objects

• Non-Luminous objects are the

exact opposites of luminous
objects. They do not give out
light but light is reflected of
them. That is how we see these
particular types of objects.
Black and White

A white shirt reflects most of the

light shining on it this is why in
cricket test matches they wear this
specific color of shirt, as they have
to play for 8 hours. A dark shirt
absorbs most of the light shining on
it and our eyes to not detect very
much of light reflecting of it.
The Human Eye

• If you look at an object the light from the sun is reflected of that object
into your eyes. The light enters through the pupil. It is focused on the back
of our by the cornea and the lens. The image is formed on the back side of
your eyes called the retina. Retina is where light sensitive cells called rods
and cones absorb the light. Rods are mainly around the edge of the retina
and a sensitive to dim light. Cones are mainly found in the center of the
retina and a sensitive to bright light. These then make a signal sent to the
brain along the optic nerve.
