GOMBURZA
2
“The first seeds of
nationalism were sown
and took root.”
FR. JOSE BURGOS
4
✣ Spanish descent, born in the
Philippines
✣ He was a parish priest of the
Manila Cathedral
✣ close to the liberal Governor
General de la Torre
✣ 35 years old that time
✣ was active and outspoken in
advocating the Filipinization of
the clergy.
5
✣ He was quoted as saying,
“Why shall a young man
strive to rise in the profession
of law or theology when he
can vision no future for
himself but obscurity?”
6
FR. MARIANO GOMEZ
7
✣ 37 years old Spanish, born in
the Philippines
✣ parish priest of Marikina
✣ was known to be unfriendly
to and would not
countenance any arrogance
or authoritative behavior
from Spaniards coming
from Spain 8
FR. JACINTO ZAMORA
9
✣ old man in his mid-’70, Chinese-
Filipino, born in Cavite
✣ held the most senior position of
the three as Archbishop’s Vicar
in Cavite
✣ was truly nationalistic and
accepted the death penalty
calmly as though it were his
penance for being pro-Filipinos.
10
The three priests incurred
the hatred of the Spanish
authorities for leading the
campaign against the abusive
Spanish friars and fighting for
equal rights among priests.
11
They fought on unresolved
issues about secularization in
the Philippines that resulted in
a conflict among the religious
regulars and the church
seculars.
12
Execution of GOMBURZA is
an attempt of the Spanish
government and Frailocracia to
instill fear among the Filipinos so
that they may never commit such
daring act again. This event was
tragic but served as one of the
moving forces that shaped Filipino
nationalism. The first seeds of
nationalism were sown and took
root. 13
Their execution left a
profound effect on many
Filipinos, including Dr. Jose
Rizal, the national hero, who
dedicated his novel Noli Me
Tangere to their memory.
