POWER OVER ETHERNET

PREPARED BY: DELA PAZ RR

POWER OVER ETHERNET

is a technology for wired Ethernet local area networks (LANs) that

allows the electrical current necessary for the operation of each device
to be carried by the data cables rather than by power cords. Doing so
minimizes the number of wires that must be strung in order to install
the network. PoE was originally developed in 2003 to support devices
like Wi-Fi access points (APs). PoE made AP installations easier and
more flexible, especially on ceilings.
the electrical current must go into the data cable at the power-
supply end, and come out at the device end, in such a way that the
current is kept separate from the data signal so that neither interferes
with the other. The current enters the cable by means of a component
called an injector. If the device at the other end of the cable is PoE
compatible, then that device will function properly without
modification. If the device is not PoE compatible, then a component
called a picker (or tap) must be installed to remove the current from
the cable. This "picked-off" current is routed to the power jack.
ETHERNET
is a group of LAN technologies which are Covered in IEEE
802.3 u standard. The ethernet is easily maintained and
managed and considered to be low cost network
implementation solution
it comes in three variations , 10 BASE-T ETHERNET, FAST
ETHERNET AND GIGABIT ETHERNET.
FAST ETHERNET VS GIGABIT ETHERNET

FAST ETHERNET GIGABIT ETHERNET

100 Mbps 1 Gps

Up to 10 kms Max of 70kms

Successor of 10 Base-T ethernet Successor of Fast ethernet

POE POWERED DEVICES
POE BENEFITS

Because PoE allows you to use one cable for both power and data
transmission, PoE saves you money on purchasing and running cable for
networking equipment and VoIP phones.
PoE makes installing or expanding a network much simpler and
cheaper in buildings where it is too expensive or inconvenient to install
new power lines.
Using PoE lets you mount devices in places where it would be
impractical to install power, such as drop ceilings.
Using PoE can reduce the number of cables and electrical outlets
needed in a crowded equipment room or wiring closet.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES

ADVANTAGE
SIMPLE CABLING AND REDUCE LABOR COST
SAFE AND CONVINIENT
CONVINIENT FOR MAINTENANCE

DISADVANTAGE
POWER INSUFFICIENT
CENTRALIZED RISK
HIGH EQUIPMENT AND MAINTENANCE COST
SIMPLE CABLING AND REDUCE MAINTENANCE COST

Centralized power supply, one network cable can transmit data and
power supply, PoE enables network devices no longer require extra power
supply, greatly reduce the installation cost and time.

SAFE AND CONVINIENT

Power Sourcing Equipment only provides power supply to PoE-
enabled devices. For example, PoE switch only transmit power supply when it
detects the connection of PoE-enabled devices. This can avoid the risk of
leakage. Users can mix use existing non-PoE device and PoE-enabled devices,
both of them can co-exist.

CONVINIENT FOR MAINTENANCE

Similar to data transmission, PoE can be managed through Simple

Network Management Protocol (SNMP). This function can offer shut down
at night,remote reset etc functions.
Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is a popular
protocol for network management. It is used for collecting information
from, and configuring, network devices, such as servers, printers, hubs,
switches, and routers on an Internet Protocol (IP) network.
POWER INSUFICIENT
powered device can't boot: 802.3af PoE standard maximum
output power is below 15.4W, this is sufficient to provide power supply for
most of IP cameras. However, this output power is not sufficient for high
power consumption devices such as network PTZ camera.

CENTRALIZED RISK
Generally, a PoE switch connects to multiple IP cameras, if PoE
network switch encounters any problems, all IP cameras will stop working.

HIGH EQUIPMENT AND MAINTENANCE COST

Compared to other power supplying methods, PoE technology
increases maintenance workload, when considering security and stability,
separate power supply is best.
