HISTORY
The square made in the fourteen
century.
Initially known as the "Square of
Triumphs" and again "Piazza della
Signoria
The square is dominated by the
famous Clock Tower.

SURROUNDINGS:
At the west end, the piazza is dominated by the Clock Tower , flanked by
symmetrical buildings of Capitanio and Camerlenghi, buildings from
the sixteenth and seventeenth century in mannerist style.
On the square to the left column Marciana (mid-eighteenth century,) is a
monument composed of pieces from the church of San Marco

Under the hall the sellers of fabrics and fur were installed, while at the foot of
the stairs of the palace that concerned the square the tents of poultry and
game vendors and fruit vendors (east) while the removable benches of the
footwear and leather vendors were installed in the space
Under the Tower of the Elders there were salt sellers
Medieval houses were arranged in the north, with rectification of the arcades.
The balconies supported by wooden columns from the houses of the west

•IN 1874 THE PALACE OF DEBITE WAS REPLACED BY PRISONS.
•THE WELL IN SQUARE WAS SEALLED 1930
•SUARE WAS PAVED IN MIDDLE ,EIGHTEEN AND NINTEEN CENTURY.
•ON ST. JAMES DAY A PALIO RACE IS HOSTED IN THE SQUARE, STARTED BY CITIZEN IN 1382.
