INTRODUCING

STATISTICS
THINK OF A
QUESTION THAT IS IN
YOUR MIND AT THIS
MOMENT.
EXAMPLES:
• How old is our teacher?
• How old are the people residing in our town?
• Does it rain more in our country than in Thailand?
• Do math teachers earn more than science
teachers?
• What is the weight of my smallest classmate?
CLASSIFY THE QUESTIONS IN
TO TWO.
1.Answerable by fact
2.Require more than one
information and needs further
thinking
Statistics as a Tool
in Decision-
Making
STATISTICS
• Statistics is defined as a science
that studies data to be able to
make a decision.
• It is a science that involves the
methods of collecting,
processing, summarizing and
analyzing data in order to provide
answers or solutions to an
inquiry.
STATISTICS
•It needs to interpret and
communicate the results of the
methods identified above to
support a decision that one makes
when faced with a problem or an
inquiry.
•It is an art
Functions/ uses of statistics:
characterize persons,
objects, situations, and
phenomena;
 explain relationships among
variables;
Functions/ uses of statistics:
formulate objective
assessments and comparisons;
and, more importantly
make evidence-based
decisions and predictions.
TRIVIA ABOUT STATICTICS
The word “statistics” actually comes
from the word “state”
In the Christian Bible, particularly the
Book of Numbers, God is reported to
have instructed Moses to carry out a
census.
TRIVIA ABOUT STATICTICS
Another census mentioned in the
Bible is the census ordered by
Caesar Augustus throughout the
entire Roman Empire before the
birth of Christ.

MECHANICS:
• Group yourself according to your seatmate.
• Identify which of the following questions are
answerable using a statistical process.
• Raise the YES word if it is answerable by a
statistical process and NO if answerable by a
fact.
HOW MANY DAYS ARE
THERE IN DECEMBER?

ANSWER
NO
HOW MANY BOOKS DO MY
CLASSMATES USUALLY BRING
TO SCHOOL?

ANSWER YES
WHAT IS THE PROPORTION OF FILIPINO
CHILDREN AGED 0 TO 5 YEARS WHO
ARE UNDERWEIGHT OR
OVERWEIGHT FOR THEIR AGE?

ANSWER YES
HOW MUCH DOES THE
BARANGAY CAPTAIN RECEIVE
AS ALLOWANCE?

ANSWER NO
DOES THE PRINCIPAL OF THE
SCHOOL HAS A POST
GRADUATE DEGREE?

ANSWER NO
WHAT IS THE MAIN CAUSE OF
INFLATION RATE?

ANSWER YES
What is the
Statistical Process
in Solving a
Problem?
“Do dogs eat more than
cats?”
PLAN
COLLECT
EXAMINE

SUMMARIZE VERIFY
PLAN
*Get representative group of dogs and
another representative group of cats.
*Consider factors like how many dogs
and cats are included in the group.
*How to select those included in the
representative groups and when to
observe these animals for their
characteristics?
COLLECT

Collect the important data such as

characteristics like the animal weight,
amount of food in grams eaten per day
and breed of the
animal
VERIFY

Verify the quality of the data to make

a good decision
SUMMARIZE

Summarize the result.

Quality Check
EXAMINE

make a decision or
provide
answers to the problem
or question at hand
STATISTICAL PROCESS
–Planning or designing the collection of data to
answer statistical questions in a way that
maximizes information content and minimizes
bias;
–Collecting the data as required in the plan;
STATISTICAL PROCESS

–Verifying the quality of the

data after they were
collected;
– Summarizing the information
extracted from the data; and
STATISTICAL PROCESS

–Examining the summary statistics so

that insight and meaningful
information can be produced to
support decision-making or solutions
to the question or problem at hand.
Identify which of the following questions are answerable
using a statistical process.

1.What is a typical size of a

Filipino family?
2.How many hours in a day?
3. How old is the oldest man residing in
the Philippines?
4. Is planet Mars bigger than planet
Earth?
5. What is the average wage rate in
the country?
6. Would Filipinos prefer eating
bananas rather than apple?
7. How long did you sleep last night?
8. How much a newly-hired public
school teacher in NCR earns in a
month?
9. How tall is a typical
Filipino?
10. Did you eat your
breakfast today?
For each of the identified
questions that are answerable
using a statistical process,
describe the activities involved
in the process. Group Activity.
