Optical

Transition
When we excite one of the outer electrons
to a higher energy level or remove it
completely from the atom, the resulting
vacancy can be filled by electrons dropping
into the empty state. The energy lost by
these electrons usually appears as emitted
photons, which are in the visible range of
the spectrum and are thus known as
optical transitions.
Photons in the ultraviolet region, invisible
to the human eye, have higher energies
than those in the visible region, and hence
if an ultraviolet photon is absorbed by an
atom, the outer electron can be excited to
higher level.
