Normal Distribution
• All normal distributions are symmetric,
single peaked and bell shaped
• The exact density curve for a particular
Normal Distribution is described by
giving its mean (x-bar) and standard
deviation (s)

Standard Deviation: Let’s try
this out with a new dataset.
spend a few minutes on this:
x = 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22
Remember to make columns!
Now find the z score for
A = 20, B = 10, and C = 15
using the standard deviation
of the same dataset
Let’s practice with slides
and the projector.

Let’s compare scores

across distributions!
Comparing Scores Across Distributions
The amount of time spent per month on
Facebook by female SUNY Cortland students is
normally distributed with a mean of 273 minutes
and a standard deviation of 68 minutes. For male
SUNY Cortland students the distribution is
N(243, 77).
a) What is the standardized score for a female
student, Jessica, who spends 6 hours (360
minutes) per month on Facebook?

c) Jim spends 173 minutes per month on

Who spends more time on Facebook relative to
their peers (other males or females)? How do you
know?

d) Look at your answers for part a and part b.
Who spends more time relative to their peer
group on the ‘book each month—Jessica or Brad?
How do you know?

That was an example that used
minutes, but you can apply that
process to other examples: sports
scores, exam scores, intelligence
scores, ages, and so forth.
Children Watching T.V.
The mean weekly television viewing time for
children in first grade is 14 hours, with a
standard deviation of 6. The mean weekly
television viewing time for children in second
grade is 12 hours, with a standard deviation of
5.
Stephanie is in the first grade and watches 12
hours of TV a week. Bill is in the second grade
and watches 10 hours of TV a week. Compared
to their peers, who watches more TV?
Let’s work with IQ scores.
Your excellent statistics
professor has an IQ of _____.
What would be his z-score?
(100, 15).
Let’s play the game
backwards.
If I give you a z-score, can you
give me the raw score?
s(z) + 𝑥ҧ = raw score
Let’s work with IQ scores.
Jerry thinks his IQ is 2
standard deviations above
the mean of the population.
What does he think his raw IQ
score must be? (100, 15).
Let’s work with IQ scores.
Janice has an angry professor
who said she thinks Janice’s IQ
is 1.5 standard deviations
below average. What would
this make Janice’s raw IQ
score? (100, 15).
What concerns you the most about the
exam?
**It will be structured similar to the quizzes.
I’ll provide plenty of scratch paper, and/or
will print single-sided so you have plenty of
room to write.
**You will also have T/F statements, and
multiple-choice questions.
**Round z-scores, averages, and so on to .00.
What concerns you the most about the
exam?
**Write legibly! If I cannot read your answer,
then I have to assume you got it wrong. 
**Horizontal box-and-whisker plot
**Differentiate between Z and 2?
**Scratch paper (empty page) might be your
friend if you have bad penmanship. If time
permits, you can write a clean answer on the
side with print.
What concerns you the most about the
exam?
**HERE IS THE FINAL QUESTION:
Reflect on the practice questions, lesson
materials, and pacing over the first three
weeks. Is the material moving too quickly,
slowly, or just right? Have the practice
quizzes/practice exam helped you much?
Have you taken them? Write a few sentences
checking in with me with your comfort level
and if I need to make any changes.
Exam I next class
Bring one-page cheat sheet
(HANDWRITTEN, NOT FRONT-AND-BACK),
1-2 pencils (NO PENS) with erasers, and a
basic calculator.
The practice exam answers are posted.
Remember, z-scores are about relative
performance. Think conceptually.
GOOD LUCK!
