WATER

POLLUTION
What is water pollution?

• Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies

(eg. Lakes, rivers, oceans, sea and groundwater) very
often by human activities.
• It occurs when pollutants (particles, chemicals or
substances that make water contaminated) are
discharged directly or indirectly into water bodies
without enough treatment to get rid of harmful
compounds
Causes of water pollution

Chemical fertilizers and

Global warming pesticides Improper drainage system
Causes of water pollution

Dumping waste Industrial waste Oil pollution Acid rain

• Acid rain results when
sulfur dioxide (SO2) • While a small portion
and nitrogen oxides of the SO2 and NOX
that cause acid rain is
(NOX) are emitted into from natural sources
the atmosphere and such as volcanoes,
transported by wind most of it comes from
and air currents. the burning of fossil
fuels.
• The SO2 and NOX
react with water,
• Winds can blow SO2
oxygen and other and NOX over long
chemicals to form distances and across
sulfuric and nitric borders making acid
acids. These then rain a problem for
everyone and not just
mix with water and those who live close
other materials before to these sources
falling to the ground.
One of the effect
on Taj Mahal due
to acid rain
• The air in this place contains serious levels of
sulphur and nitrogen oxides. This is due to the large
number of industries set up nearby Taj Mahal and
pollution of Yamuna River.
• As per metrological studies the wind direction is
usually move in the direction where Taj is situated.
All these led to acid rain. Acid rain reacted with the
marble (calcium carbonate) of Taj Mahal and this
causing damage to heritage structure. To protect Taj
Mahal, a government of India institute called NEERI
targets at clearing the air in 'Taj Trapezium'.
• Taj Trapezium refers to an area that includes towns
of Agra, Mathura, Bharatpur and Firozabad. As a
result of this plan, over 2000 industries situated
inside the trapezium had transferred. Still the
current situation is critical because of nearby leather
industry.
