the Earth’s surface was once a huge super continent called Pangaea surrounded by one ocean. •A Plate is a rigid block of Earth’s crust. About 50-150 kilometers thick. •Some plates contain both continental and oceanic crust •Some contain only the oceanic crust. •Others contain only the continental crust. •Forces acting on this super continent caused it to break into several big and small pieces. •After millions of years the super continent continued to break into separate crustal plates. •Scientist have identified seven (7) major plates. 1. Pacific plate 2. North American plate 3. South American plate 4. African plate 5. Eurasian plate 6. Australian plate 7. Antarctic plate The pacific plate is an oceanic plate, the rest are continental plates consisting of land masses.
