MOUNTAINS & RIVERS

• Mount Teide (Tenerife) is the highest mountain peak in Spain
and is the third largest volcano in the world from its base
• Major rivers in Spain are Tagus (Tajo), Ebro, Guadiana,
Douro (Duero), Guadalquivir, Júcar, Segura, Turia and Minho
(Miño).
• Spain also includes the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean
Sea, the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean and a number

WHAT IS ANDORRA?

• Andorra is the sixth-smallest nation in Europe, having an


area of 468 square kilometer's (181 sq mi) .
• Population of approximately 77,281.
• The official language is Catalan; Spanish, Portuguese, and
French are also commonly spoken.
• Euro is its official currency.
• It has been a member of the United Nations since 1993.
• In 2013, Andorra had the highest life expectancy in the world
at 81 years, according to the Global Burden of Disease
Study.
GEOGRAPHY

• Andorra is a small, landlocked country in southwestern


Europe, located in the eastern Pyrenees mountain range and
bordered by Spain and France.
• Its area is 468 km², it is the sixth smallest country in Europe
and also the largest of the European microstates.
• Landslides and avalanches are the main natural hazards.
There are frequent earthquakes below Richter magnitude
• Andorra consists predominantly of rugged mountains, the
highest being the Coma Pedrosa at 2,942 metres (9,652 ft),
and the average elevation is 1,996 metres (6,549 ft).
MOUNTAINS & RIVERS

• All of Andorra is mountainous, and in total, there are 65


mountain peaks.
• The highest mountain is Coma Pedrosa, which rises to
2,942 m (9,652 ft) in the northwest of Andorra near the
French and Spanish borders.
• Andorra is drained almost entirely by a single basin whose
main river, the Gran Valira, exits the country in the south
near the Spain–Andorra road border crossing. There are two
main tributaries and six smaller open basins. These basins
gave the name by which the region was traditionally known,

• Andorra has 172 lakes, of which the largest is Estanys de
Juclar (23 hectares or 56.8 acres) near Pic de Noé in the
north east
Climate

• The climate in Andorra varies greatly with elevation. The


valleys have a climate that is similar to the temperate climate
of Andorra's neighbours, but because of the higher elevation,
winters tend to be more severe, the humidity lower, and
summers slightly cooler.
• Snow completely covers the northern valleys for several
months. There are, on average, 300 days per year of
sunshine. Average daily peak insolation varies from 1150
W/m2 in June to 280 W/m2 in December.
• The average annual temperature varies from 11 °C (52 °F) in
Sant Julià de Lòria in the south, to 8 °C (46 °F) in La
Massana in the centre, and to 2 °C (36 °F) in Arcalis in the
north.
TOURISM

• Tourism, the mainstay of Andorra's tiny, well-to-do economy,


accounts for roughly 80% of GDP. An estimated 10.2 million
tourists visit annually, attracted by Andorra's duty-free status
and by its summer and winter resorts.
• One of the main sources of income in Andorra is tourism
from ski resorts which total over 175 km (109 mi) of ski
ground. The sport brings in over 7 million visitors annually
and an estimated 340 million euros per year, sustaining
2,000 direct and 10,000 indirect jobs at present since 2007.

GOVERNMENT & PEOPLE


• Andorra is a parliamentary co-principality with the President
of France and the Catholic Bishop of Urgell as Co-Princes.
This peculiarity makes the President of France, in his
capacity as Prince of Andorra, an elected reigning monarch,
although he is not elected by a popular vote of the Andorran
people. The politics of Andorra take place in a framework of a
parliamentary representative democracy, whereby the Head
of Government is the CEO and of a pluriform multi-party
system.
